Why Bracket Busters is Invaluable
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.Tags: None

I don't see that there is much value in "mid-major's" playing each other. The Bracket Buster concept would definitely help the "mid-major" schools more if they could play the 4th or 5th place team in a "major" conference. That way there would be head to head competition to see which gets an at-large bid, the middle of the road "major" or top-tier "mid-major".

Obviously, majors playing mids would be the way to go. However, most schools have trouble scheduling good teams (see UNI's schedule next season). This enables schools that have comparable RPI's get a late season boost to the SOS...and even get that big win late! It may actually help UNI this year if the next week goes well. Plus, it's national exposure! The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Well, if we're all in agreement that mids vs. majors is better, I wouldn't say that the Bracket Buster is Invaluable, because there is more value to be had with other scenarios. There is some value in the current set-up, but it's not certainly ideal in helping decide who gets an at-large bid and who doesn't
As for the scheduling of these games, I was under the impression that ESPN had some say in who plays who. And if ESPN does have some imput, then I would think that more middle of the pack majors could be scheduled.

Even though ESPN has some input, the teams still have to agree to be part of the bracket busters. A middle of the pack major team will have more to lose than they will have to gain by playing a top mid-major team, they won't want to participate, especially since teams from major conferences will have an advantage over teams from mid-major conferences in the eyes of the selection committee because of the fact they play in a major conference. Maybe not fair, but its true.

Well said Milo, very well said. There is nothing saying a mid-major has the right to play a major conference team to have an opportunity to improve RPI, but we don't.
There is no way to make the major conference teams (and for scheduling reasons you can't have just the lower division teams from major leagues involved) participate, even if it would make for a more compelling event.
Looking at our non-conference schedule is a good exercise in this respect. We can't get major conference teams to play us early in the year regularly, when we have the right to schedule anyone we want. The major conference teams, more and more every year, have less to gain and more to lose by playing teams like ours, so more and more often they will refuse to do so, as is their right.
Bracketbuster is a great event becasue it's primary objective (either stated or not) is to get mid-major teams a shot at some national exposure, which is what happend with UNI this year. If we beat WSU and make the conference final, but don't win it, only to get an at-large bid, you can thank bracket buster.
