Just wanted to share my NH game experience back at UNI.

For those thinking about coming back for the next weekend's game, but dont want to try and relive the "bar scene", check out the casino, go to the game, and then come back for some drinks and gambling. It was a great time and split among 4-5 friends, pretty reasonable.

Get back to Cedar Falls next weekend and cheer on our Panthers!

Fantastic hotel. I agree, it's the place to stay (even if you're not into the Casino thing.)

If you go there you gotta try the buffet!! At ~$18 it is costly, but totally worth it if you are starving!

Spent the night after a game last season.

A couple beers, rolled the bones, enjoyed a late buffett and retired to the very fine accomodations.

        All good.

how do you think the casinos make their money?

Because schmucks keep throwing their money away at them.

Have you been in a casino lately...they're all penny and nickle slots, and they make an absolute killing. (Of course, nobody bets a penny, they bet twenty pennies a pull, but it's technically a penny slot.)

If you're using truly expendable income, and you enjoy the experience....
then more power to you! It's no different than spending your money on any other sort of entertainment.

But, in the end, you're going to end up losing more than you win on average. It is simple mathematics.

So don't bet it if you can't afford to lose it. Not singling anyone here out, just talking about generality.

How did this turn into a debate on the ills of gambling?

If one is worried about 20 bones in the slots, they need not enter the building.

                            Re: Isle of Capri

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'd rather add to a discussion than start another one and clutter the board.

We visited the new Diamond Jo in Dubuque over the weekend. Holy sheetockie is that a beautiful place. I know Dubuque lost a fairly significant amount of business to Waterloo initially, but they threw a freakin haymaker back in response.

The new facility is located in the Ice Harbor, just across the parking lot from where the now vacant boat sits. The building is large, with a huge connected parking ramp. Instead of going for the glitzy, bright neon look of the Isle, they went with a dark wood, very earthy, woodsy feel that fits much better with the riverfront than a Vegas-style facility would. Most of the ground floor is the large, rectangular, very spacious gaming floor. They have five restaurants and bars, but unlike Waterloo they are separate and have their own slot machines for gaming. One of them is a theater style bar with 800+ seats. There is a sit-down, steak-house style restaurant and the usual buffet, plus a deli on the casino floor.

Upstairs are more bars and a 30 lane bowling facility (plus a 4-lane, private, "VIP" bowling suite). BRILLIANT idea. When we were leaving about 8pm, the bowling alley was packed with teenagers and kids bowling and playing video games while mom and dad gambled downstairs.

The large resort/water park is 100 yards across the parking lot, the River Museum isn't a 1/4 mile away, and a large new "main street" style devlopment with shopping and restaurants will be opening within the year, plus the renovated brewery with restaurants and entertainment facilities is nearby. The large convention center (which is stunning all by itself) is a very short walk away, and you could walk in less than 10 minutes to the bars, restaurants and shops on lower main (they're talking about putting in a light rail or tram system to move people between the harbor and Lower Main in the future since a busy highway separates the two.)

Not to beat the same horse again, but it struck me again how Waterloo dropped the ball. The Isle is a gorgeous facility, and the hotel is a great asset the Diamond Jo doesn't have, not to mention being the nicest hotel facility in town by a country mile. Just imagine what that facility placed in Downtown could've done. When I lived in Dubuque, the Ice Harbor was 3 times more neglected and disgusting that downtown Waterloo will ever be, and now it's an absolute tourist jewel (if they get the baseball park built down there...look out). It's a shame - hopefully things will eventually build in around the Isle.

                              Re: Isle of Capri

It got voted down for two reasons. First, the little old ladies got upset about the tax increase it was going to bring with it. Second, the whole thing was going to be put together by Michael Gartner. Then the idiot went and was the keynote speaker at the state Planned Parenthood convention. That pretty well killed him in the Key City, and the people weren't about to bankroll his next business venture.
