  • SIU New Facilites

I didn't see this posted anywhere, but SIU will be opening up their new facilites this year.

    http://athletics.salukiway.siu.edu/facilities.php

I know we have the beautiful McLeod Center already, and we've done some great upgrades to the Dome, but does anyone have any insight on future upgrades for our facilities? I knew it was once rumored that the West Gym was going to be turned completely into a wrestling facility, if the funding had legs. And the Dome is looking a bit long in the tooth when it comes to the facade, IMO.

I think updating the Dome should be the next step. New seats, updated facade to look like the McLeod and throw in a couple of extra women's bathrooms.

I doubt they will put in additional bathrooms before the fire later this year. After that, UNI will be playing football outdoors.

I think the athletic fund drives right now are focusing directly on endowing scholarships.

Hartzell's legacy was improving facilities.....Dannen's will be endowing scholarships....

I think seats in the dome are on the priority list, are they not? I think it is going to happen within the next year or two.

For the most part, facilities are great at UNI right now though. We have some top notch facilites for an FCS/midmajor school.

The facade of the Dome doesn't bother me one bit. But it's been proven that I'm not nearly as picky as many of y'all.

The seating doesn't bother me either, but IMO those should take priority over the exterior.

And while I think the scoreboards are just fine, I'd put those ahead of the seats.

I'm sure the ladies would really appreciate more restroom facilities, but I don't see that happening without a major remodel of the concourses.

Of course, I'm not making any capital donations this year (hell, I could donate my entire yearly wages and it wouldn't qualify as a capital donation. haha), so my opinion on the matter doesn't hold any weight whatsoever.

Remember also that Saluki Way is funded by a $20 million donation from the city of Carbondale over a 20 year span ($1 mil/yr). Also, I believe that they are getting student fees to help with the buildings. The McLeod Center got a small 'loan' (which could become a grant) from the city of CF and I don't believe any student fees were used.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

They have looked into painting the seats and putting in new seats in the Dome. Just to paint the seats is gonna cost $200,000. Dannen wants to put new scoreboards in the Dome as well. I agree that the Dome could use some other upgrades and the McCleod Center needs a lobby area for the south side ticket booth.

I've been watching the progress, hoping that they are able to fix the leaks as they go. I think I am going to miss the metallic look of the Dome.

This. We Dome purists are happy. Now if they can bring back the wind tunnel experience.

Great memories of that. Back when I used to go to the Dome with my mom on Sunday mornings when she had to work after game days, I would always have toys with me to keep me occupied. We always went through a side door on the concourse because that is what her key was for. I remember one time, the toys in my hand flew EVERYWHERE trying to walk through that windy door. I was really little so I was scared of that door for a little while after.
