  • News: Schools closer to giving cost of attendance

NCAA president Mark Emmert says there is a reasonable chance the five power conferences of college football will be able to supply athletes with full cost of attendance after being granted autonomy to do so sometime after an upcoming NCAA convention.

The schools formerly known as "BCS" will eventually cannibalize themselves. It's just a question of how quickly it happens.

they will eventually break off officially & pay their athletes, have a huge playoff & officially become the minor leagues for pro sports. Some will say this has all but happened already. It's a damn shame.

I thought athletes already got paid. I mean they get a "free" education for crying out loud. The normal college student graduates with $50,000+ in student loans. These guys have none and they are complaining about it? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Many UNI student/athletes do get a "free" education. However, at a recent PSC Board meeting we were informed that over 200 of the student/athletes pay for their entire education - no scholarship help. That total is half of the # of student/athletes. This means the student/athletes pay just over 2 million dollars to the general fund - which is why I don't understand why the academics across Hudson get to hot under the collar about the athletic programs...
It also shows what a GREAT job coaches do in recruiting student/athletes - they are willing to pay their own way to compete....

Wow! You think some of these guys have tattoos now--with all that extra money they may be able to get full body tats just like that clown in the NBA with the spiked hair.

This will be great for the 'Elites' but how does a school like Iowa State or Colorado or Mississippi State or Washington State come up with the money to be able to afford this.

They'll blow all their TV money on paying guys and have nothing left for coaches and facilities.

As we seem to be moving toward "paying" college athletes, I mostly hear descriptions of what it will be like for the future professional athletes in revenue-generating sports, but not much about what it will be like for all the future professionals in something other than sports and the athletes in non-revenue-generating sports.

How might it work across the board to pay college athletes?

not really sure how it affects non-sports careers. I mean does the fact that pro athletes get crazy amounts of money affect non-sports careers?

don't really know that it will affect non-revenue sports either. Other than inflating the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" in terms of schools/programs. The schools that are raking in tons of TV/etc. money from their football and MBB programs may be able to similarly pay higher "cost of attendance" rates to their athletes from other sports (and may be forced to w/ Title IX), but the other schools won't be able to. Which will mean that the higher level recruits have even more incentive to go to the big money schools, which furthers the advantage that those schools already have.

But I'm guessing that the limits on the number of scholarships awarded remain in place, so the schools will have the same number of athletes, but some of those athletes/recruits who had been going to the smaller schools in order to see more playing time may decide to remain at the bigger schools and ride the bench b/c they get more "cost of attendance" money. I dunno.

We think the cost of a ticket to an UNI-UI football was high before. . .

I hope the casual Iowa, ISU fan will appreciate paying a higher ticket price to cover the walking around money of mercenaries that do not graduate and will not stay in state and contribute to Iowa's economy .

a high percentage of UNI's football players don't stay in state or contribute to Iowa's economy either.

We are not going to be paying an extra $2,000 per year to our 500 plus scholarship athletes.
