  • Rick Nelson Leaving Staff

It looks like Rick Nelson has been hired as the head football coach at Ankeny High School. I am a bit surprised by this, honestly I was surprised that Nick his son wasn't hired for the job as he has been on staff there for a couple of years.

This is a great opportunity for Rick, his son has three years of lower level (9th / 10th grade) coaching experience. Hardly a resume for a CIML Head Coaching job. He will be a great head coach some day but needs to build his resume a little more. Rick is a great leader of young men and will be sorely missed in Cedar Falls. As a football program and community we have been lucky to have him as long as we have.

Best of luck to Coach Nelson, he will do great!

How much of a pay cut will he take? Best of luck to him...

The Register has his Salary listed at just over $71,000 yearly. Im sure there is camp money to go on top of that.

Rick has a Masters degree and Ankeny pays very well. I would guess with coaching and teaching Rick will make very close to if not more than where he is now. Not to mention the only person he has to worry about recruiting against now is Jerry Pezetti lol!

Best of luck. I guess this makes total offensive staff turnover. Wow...

Jeg do you anticipate him teaching?

Nevermind the Register article says that he will be a PE instructor.

I would guess that his salary would be very similar if not higher at Ankeny compared to the $71,000 he made at UNI (which isn't that bad for a non P5 offensive line coach) plus he will have much less time on the road and more time with family.

I wish Rick the best as he moves on in his career. Ankeny has shown it can get the athletes to make runs possible, even in the CIML.

Any former players can answer this... How does this impact the program relationship with past players? From what I heard/understood, Rick was the one person who worked to maintain relationships with past players as they moved on with their lives. That could make him nearly impossible to replace.

Yes. Nelly is going to be missed greatly... by the current staff, players and fans and mostly by the former players.

Wish him the best... but this is a bummer for us.

Good luck to him. I think this is a bit of a tough road, with most of the better athletes going to the new Ankeny school and him getting the leftovers. Is Ankeny big enough to field two top CIML teams? It won't be a garden party.

Ankeny High advanced further last year than Centennial in the post season... Year one and two of the separate schools would be the hardest to get past, they are even now imho...

Within 5 years both schools will have their enrollment close to what it was before the split, they should be back to being truly competitive with Dowling, Valley and the other suburb schools. Really it kind of changes every year, this year Waukee was up there, but in the past it has been someone like SEP.

Waukee's going to have to split in the very near future as well...population and enrollment is exploding. They'll be in the same boat as Ankeny soon.

It would be interesting to see what public school head coaches get vs. the privates. I was told back in '08 or so when Simpson College last hired a head football coach that they offered the Valley HC 85k and he turned it down because he was already making more than that as the Valley HC.

Rick has had some fantastic offensive lines in his time at UNI. The last few years have been pretty pitiful by comparison. Hopefully this is not an indication of an empty cupboard on the o-line.
