Re: UNI Rebranding Proposal
No thank you. Keep the current logo. We don't need to be in search of an identity every decade or so.
If anything, start mixing in some use of the old Panther logo occasionally (the one from the 80's and 90's updated with UNI instead of Northern Iowa).__________________

Nothing about this is official. Just a fan having fun.
I do like the want to bring back the NI logo. That should make a come back, hard. Love the old gold being involved. I despise the yellow that we share with Iowa and Iowa State.
I despise the current logo. It is generic late 90s early 2000s fad of the flying logo that everyone did. Seriously, go look at logos designed between 97-05. 90+% of them followed this exact same look. I could go to SportsLogos.net and post hundreds of them between the NCAA and NBA during that time.

What we think of when we think of a panther is a "black panther", as that is what we have chosen as our mascot. The reality is that a "black panther" is any panthera species with black as it's melanistic color. A jaguar, or leopard, that is all black is considered a "black panther".
This is a black panther - but it's a jaguar

There is much debate over whether a true, all black, black cougar/puma/catamount/mountain lion/etc... exists. Typically they can/do have black "mutations" but the tawny/grey color that is normal for them still shows on the bottom side of it. The reason is that jaguars and leopards have black normally in their color, and thus being "all black" is a reasonable genetic mutation. Pumas are one color and it doesn't involve black.
Thus, TC and TK are probably actually either a leopard or jaguar and not actually a panther. Though they are technically considered a black panther.
Sorry for the offshoot. I just happen to really like the felis/puma species.

Marketing is definitely moving away from it however. I know at least with school orgs and sports clubs, they are cracking down on what is acceptable club branding. They don't even allow clubs to use the NI logo anymore, which probably is indicative of the direction athletics is taking as well.
I wouldn't say I'm a fan of our current logo, but its acceptable enough. It just seems a bit small school-y. Something more simple that makes us stand out as a national brand would be more ideal. Trouble is, all of our success has come with our current logo, and that reason is good enough for me to be content with what we have.
