  • ISU and UI chipping in?

I'm sure it won't pass, but a bill introduced in Iowa senate that would have ISU/UI ath depts give $21.5M to UNI over 5-yr period - both teams chipping in $2.5M annually for 5 years.

To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

Actually it's $2.5M from Iowa and $1.8M from ISU for 5 years, not that it makes any difference. Has as much chance of passing as a tax increase on the wealthiest beneficiaries of our society and strict gun regulations.

Misguided effort by a naive legislator that will make UNI look bad...As though they're asking for the money.

Now...If we want to have a serious conversation about funding, let's ask the Iowa legislature why they won't accept the university funding model the Iowa Regents proposed to appropriately reflect the number of Iowa students educated at UNI. That would be real money.

It doesn't disproportionately favor the University of Iowa. We can't have things like that in this state.

Seriously. Did that just evaporate? What happened to the implementation of that?

It wasn't implemented because it didn't pass in the Legislature. I don't think it even made it out of committee because the UI and ISU lobbyists, as well as Iowa City area and Ames area legislators, made sure to kill it.

Thanks. Not sure how I missed that.

It doesn't make UNI look bad. Something similar if not the same was proposed last year (by the same legislator?) and it of course went no where as it will this year. No fall out for UNI, some of these folks just like to make wacky proposals on a regular basis.

Just to clarify...the push back was from the Iowa lobbyists specifically, not Iowa State.

Iowa State would have benefitted substantially by the proposal.

The ISU president and Ruud lobbied for it together. Iowa would have ultimately been forced to send 20 million dollars a year to both UNI and ISU.

Iowa would not have had to 'send' anything to UNI or ISU, the funding from the state would just have been allocated differently and Iowa would not have gotten their uneven portion. The current funding model simply has that students at Iowa are more valuable than students at UNI or ISU, so they get more per student.

This bill, as proposed, would actually have the universities sending money to UNI.

                      I was speaking figuratively.

Agree...Iowa would have received less from the state. UNI would have received more.
