This is not surprising in that it has been kicking around for a while. The Power 5 have overwhelmingly approved extra benefits legislation and it will now be up to others, UNI included, as to whether they will pay the extra benefits.
Troy Dannen's take is that we will have to do so in basketball, volleyball and wrestling to stay relevant in those sports. We will do so until litigation from a nonrevenue sports determines everyone on scholarship is entitled to this benefit.
Some are predicting that schools in the power 5 conferences will begin cutting back olympic sports. Iowa State has estimated that this benefit will cost them an additional $500,000 to $700,000 annually. We can't afford that at UNI. Our cost would be less in that we have less people on scholarship for all sports. We can also limit it to specific sports and also conferences may limit its members (good bye Wichita).
