  • 2015 Database of Revenue to Expense

This is the 2015 report on revenue and spending for public institutions in Division I. As we all know on this board, schools at our level outside of the Power 5 are heavily subsidized with institutional funds and state tax money.

I'm sure our new AD is reading this article as we speak.

heck, plenty of schools in the Power 5 are heavily subsidized too.

according to that report, Wichita State has the highest budget amongst public institutions in the MVC (despite not having football).
UNI has the second lowest budget (Indiana State is lower by a good amount), but also has the second lowest amount of subsidies (WSU is much lower).

    Code:
    [U]school[/U] [U]conf.[/U] [U]ttl revenue[/U] [U]ttl expense[/U] [U]ttl subsidy[/U] [U]% subsidy[/U]
    Wichita St MVC $26,682,738 $25,100,692 $ 7,461,906 27.97
    Illinois St MVC $26,316,799 $26,201,435 $19,155,965 72.79
    Missouri St	MVC $25,180,896 $25,180,896 $15,885,964 63.09
    Southern Ill. MVC $22,377,794 $25,427,042 $14,404,894 64.37
    N. Dakota St. Summit	$22,316,980 $22,268,430 $ 8,061,118 36.12
    Northern Iowa MVC	$20,477,962 $19,810,525 $10,708,536 52.29
    S. Dakota St Summit $16,393,101 $16,417,153 $ 8,259,982 50.39
    Youngstown St Horizon	$14,946,755 $14,946,755 $10,734,826 71.82

Silly question but is the subsidy considered part of the total revenue?

        Yes.
This report considers "Subsidies" to be the total of "Student Fees" and "School Funds". And the total revenue includes those two categories, plus "Ticket Sales", "Contributions", "Rights/Licensing" and "other".

Here is UNI's breakdown of revenue from 2015:
        ticket sales $2,160,629
        contributions $3,023,350
        rights / licensing $2,820,449
        student fees $1,995,455
        school funds $8,713,081
        other $1,764,998

Did you include student fees in your total subsidy number?
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

Why did UNI's "School funds" go up so drastically in 2015? $6.7M to $8.7M?

Why did "facilities/maintenance go up by 9x in 2015? Did they change accounting for something?

the NCAA did change its rules for how things had to be accounted for. more info on that can be found in footnotes on the report pages. Whether that is the reasoning for UNI's increase, I don't know.

Revenue is considered earned when the institution has met its obligation to be entitled to the benefits derived from the revenue. I think that lara.wvu.edu/policies/revenue-recognition-policy does a good job of explaining it. Governmental Accounting Standards Board 35 (GASB 35) helps to understand accounting for universities as well.

Is the athletic department still forced to pay full out of state tuition for schollys?

I know Dannen mentioned this was a priority for the department last summer. IIRC he indicated most of our peer schools charge in state tuition for athletic scholllys. This has to have a big affect on our expenses.

Yes, the AD is still paying full out of state, and in some cases *coughWomensTenniscough* full international tuition. Its ridiculous and makes the financial situation look worse than it really is.

Well in a way I think it's ridiculous that some schools arbitrarily choose a different price for Athletes (if true).

It makes about as much sense as it would making the tuition price for athletes zero dollars.

is international tuition higher than out-of-state tuition?
