If the state doesn't start honoring its obligations to Southern Illinois University, the school may have to take drastic measures, possibly even making layoffs or shutting down in the spring, President Glenn Poshard told the Board of Trustees on Wednesday.

SIU to Close Doors?
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.Tags: None

News-
It's not a good situation in Iowa right now, but we aren't hearing the threats of closing the university's doors in a month. That's a situation that is a lot worse! 2011 sounds like it's going to be bad, and I'm not sure what that is going to lead to for UNI...but in the article it mentions that there are other universities in Illinois that are in a similar situation:
Poshard said SIUC is not alone in this sinking boat. At Tuesday's Illinois Board of Higher Education meeting, he said several universities said they would be shutting down in March without help from the state. The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. When compared to the rest of the country Iowa's financial solvency is pretty good. When compared to Illinois, Iowa is doing phenomenal.Originally posted by TH1974This guy was all-UNI, and wanted to show it by pretending to play a non-existant musical instrument in public.

Hell, admission to the U of Illinois is even awarded via kickbacks. Several members of the U of Illinois Board of Trustees had to resign, and the FBI is digging in to it.

That's just nuts. Our budget cuts are bad enough, but that is taking it to a whole new scary level. Here's hoping they find a way to fix their budget. Forget sports, that would be horrible for all of the students, faculty, and staff. It's my kind of team, Charlie. My kind of team!

Re: SIU to Close Doors?
The Pew Research Center recently released a report called "Beyond California: States in Fiscal Peril" which basically compared each states financial solvency with California. The budget gap in Iowa is 13.6%, while in Illinois it is 47.3%, and in California it is 49.3%. I'm not trying to minimize the financial distress Iowa is in, but compared to these other states, our problems look pretty good.
State lawmakers play a major role in advancing the quality of Americans’ lives, from helping to protect the air we breathe and water we drink, to educating our children. By researching emerging topics and developing 50-state comparisons, Pew identifies innovative approaches states are using to help solve complex challenges.

Not to minimalize this, but since this is an athletic website...This can't be real helpful for recruiting talent to play football, b'ball etc. UNI has to fight a stupid comment by a member of the B of R about going non-scholly...this is a whole new elephant in the room.

The (unlikely) potential of SIU closing their doors should help our recruiting.
