  • VB @ SDSU and vs. Drake

the Panther volleyball team plays their final OOC match of the regular season Tuesday, traveling to Brookings to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a 6 p.m. match. (this makes the 3rd UNI/SDSU competition in four days after the swimming and diving team hosted a dual meet against the Jackrabbits, and of course the football game).

SDSU is 6-18 on the season and 0-8 in the Summit League, with RPI and Pablo both in the 290s. Frankly, UNI shouldn't have much of an issue, even on the road with little to no film to study on them. But I suppose it is dangerous to think that way about any opponent. Coach Petersen had a bit of a cold at the Media Luncheon today. Hopefully the players aren't also under the weather, as UNI's small roster doesn't offer many replacement options.

    -------------------------------------

On Saturday, the Panthers take on their travel partner, Drake, in a 7 p.m. home match. This will be UNI's annual Pink match for cancer awareness, and will actually be the second time the Panthers have worn pink jerseys this season, as they did so for their match at Wichita State as well.

Drake (9-11, 1-8 MVC) started off the year with quite a few wins in their nonconference schedule (though most of their opponents weren't terribly challenging). But they haven't had the same success thus far in Valley play, with their lone win coming at home over winless Bradley. Though they have played a number of close matches and took the Redbirds to 5 sets in Normal.

Not the strongest of performances, but the Panthers were able to beat the Jackrabbits in 4 sets: 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22

Coach Petersen changed things up for this match, moving Haley Wandrey into the libero role, after Ashlee Sinnott struggled a bit on serve receive last weekend. Sinnott moved back into the backrow role that she typically played prior to Amie Held's knee surgery.

The offense was led by Eryca Hingtgen (19 K hitting .298, 2 aces) and Lindsey Schulz (15 K hitting .370).

      Panthers sweep the Bulldogs 25-21 25-13 25-23

the win keeps UNI 3rd in the MVC standings, half a match behind Missouri State and half a match ahead of Wichita State, which are the two teams that come to Cedar Falls next weekend.

      Code:
      [U]MVC standings - thru 10/25/14[/U]
       1 ILS	11-0
       2 MSU 9-2
       3 UNI 8-2
       4 WSU 8-3
       5 INS 7-4
       6 SIU 4-7
       7 LU 3-8
       7 UE 3-8
       9 DU 1-9
      10 BU 0-11
Illinois State has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament (worst they can finish is 5th), while Bradley is the only team in NCAA division I WVB who has yet to win a match this season (they are 0-21 on the year)
