PTTB - Is this still the case? We have 3 scholys available for 2013 with a verbal from Bennett, and two offers on the table being Thomas and Shanks. Is there anything offered that I am forgetting? (Or, as repoted on PN, there would only be one remaining as Pehl lost/gave up his?)

Oh, and the DMR is now reporting the verbal with a couple quotes from Bennett. Panthers to Add Another Koch!

According to Rivals, it seems you're correct.

Think the 4th would be Pehl's as he would get his back next year for 1 year if I understand what happened this summer with him giving his up for a year.

Morrison is a year behind the other guys, so I don't think it could be his unless he wants to give up his 5th year of elibility and graduate in 4 years.

Have we even gotten confirmation from the team/school on who gave up the scholarship? I know Pehl's name has been mentioned on here, but I don't recall seeing a confirmation. Regardless, the way things have been described is that we are out of scholarships for 2012, which would mean Pehl would be on scholarship for that season.

Do we have any pages for Bennett? Like ESPN or Rivals? I wanted to do something like I did for Olivier.

UNI has 4 scholys to give for 2013 (James, Sonnen, J.Koch, Pehl)
UNI now has one of those scholys verballed to Bennett Koch.
So, UNI has three to give. There are at least four scholys offered right now to athletes (Shanks, Thomas, and Hegner), but only 3 of them have been public info that I have found.

For the 2014 class, UNI would have scholys for Morrison and Rank to give.

IMO, I think Thomas is blowing up huge and will probably get beyond UNI's grasp. Hegner is starting to see the same too. I really hope Shanks decides to come to UNI, as I think he would be a great fit.

From what I can find Bennet was listed at 6'5-6'6 last season, depending where you look. However, most things I've com across that are from over the summer (passing articles, camp mentions, etc...) have him listed at 6'7

I am sure glad that Mr. Beaton is on top of this news, I mean I do not know what we would do without more Waterloo Open news.

Agreed....

Kelly has done well with getting the UNI coverage started as a beat writter...but it seems clear that he doesn't see covering UNI as anything more than something he "has" to do. I wish someone who actually cared about the university and it's programs would take over at this point.

Who said I don't already?

Seriously though, the only thing Kelly has over a couple people (some I know are on PN, others I'm not sure) for getting UNI news out there is he has the "Courier" behind him.

I find more UNI news from "random" people on Twitter than UNI's beat writter.

I'm sure he's grown a tad too. He's only 16 or 17 still isn't he? Here's to passing 7 ft!

I would suggest emails to Doug Newhoff asking for Jim Sullivan to get the UNI Basketball beat. Great guy, great writer.

so... did we officially offer Bennett? Or what's the scoop with that? Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine offering a sophomore (at the time) who averages 3 ppg and 4 rpg.

yep. I did. A simple yes or no will do me just fine.

All I've read is that he will take a scholarship when the time comes. I havent read (or may have missed) the part where we officially offered him. I havent found him on Rivals or Espn. So, sorry for not knowing BC

Moose, how do you think this process works? You think a guy can just show up on campus and grab a scholarship out of a free basket at the door as he pleases?....

A. I was going to head out the door to go grab one if that was the case

B. It could have been a preferred walk on, maybe? It was the high school stats that made me wonder is all.

Judging by the reactions though, I think my question has been answered. Thanks guys.

i do find it odd that we offered him knowing that he would have probably committed to UNI had we offered as he was walking out the door on his way to UW-GB or something.

It is a good idea to offer early if you like them. You should never take anyone for granted even if you have ties with the whole family. And if we are planning to offer what difference does it make giving it now vs. a year from now. Having him earlier he can help recruit others to join as he plays tournaments over the next couple of years.

Then he wouldn't be that big of an asset for us, recruiting wise... but I really don't think most of us are worried about that possibility

Because, its at least a possibility that he will have a season that doesn't warrant an offer.

As others have said, I trust this staff as well, but let's not pretend like there is no potential downside to this.

My thoughts for the people who are worried about whether or not he will be good enough to play here. He seems like a smart kid and I think he will know if he is not good enough and would not want to come here just to sit on the bench.

True; doesn't sound impressive. But this is a 6'7/6'8 junior to be who has worked with and practiced against two DI players for years, and according to one article, beat an NBA D-League player (Adam) in one-on-one. I'll take that.

As long as he has a good work ethic he'll be fine. He's seen success in his brothers and I'm sure he'll do whatever he can to match or exceed that. I'm sure he'll be working with them quite a bit which will do nothing but make him better. If other recruits think he sucks, so be it. I don't think 1 player is going to make or break their decision. If anything maybe they'll see a successful program with somebody they can beat out for playing time.
