Can spring be far behind! Season starts this Friday Feb 10 at 2:45 vs Toledo in the Dome. 7 teams, 17 games over 3 days. Most notable team is Wisconsin, though they've fallen off a bit since making the WCWS a couple of years ago.

The official 2024 Softball schedule for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers

Panthers return a lot of veterans, but the graduations of seniors Ross and Wnek leave us without an established #1 pitcher, and seriously diminished HR power. Still, we're pre-season picks for 4th place, which is fair IMHO.

A look at the top three teams in the softball preseason poll and the preseason all-conference team.

We are consistently under represented on the all conference team, we have no preseason selections, but yet we always seem to be in the top 3 teams

Buchanan threw a two-hit, 8-0 shutout against Toledo. Then Lange the tough-luck loser against Wisconsin giving up two hits in the first inning, sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt, for the game's only run and no-hitting them the rest of the way with eight strikeouts. UNI had four hits but couldn't bunch them together to score.

It seems this tourney continues to get more high profile teams in it (and more geographic diversity). Would this be correct?
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

Panthers win two more today with a 10-2 rout of the Montana Griz, with Varriano hitting two home runs, including a grand slam to end the game with the 8-run mercy rule; then a 3-2 come from behind victory over South Dakota State on back to back home runs in the bottom of the sixth by Lange (2 runs) and solo shot by Wolfe. UNI now 3-1 in the tourney, outscoring opponents 21-5, with their final game at 2:45 Sunday afternoon against Nebraska-Omaha.

Good to see UNI beat Montana in something, at least. They're an interesting case, the program was started in 2015, and was able to win 29 games last season, featuring a lot of players from California and Washington. They are hosting their own tournament in mid-March, at a new facility featuring FieldTurf.

The color commentator for the TV broadcast is the old sister of UNI pitcher Jaci Spencer, Jaydn, who played at Alabama and was the reason the Tide appeared in our tournament a couple of years ago.

Excited that the team is back in Cedar Falls next weekend. I may have to check them out on April 1st.

It was a tough series this weekend, we led all 3 games going into the bottom of the 7th, but only won one. Very surprised that coach Jacobs left Lange in to get pummeled, after she'd pitched a complete game yesterday. Spencer was available, and Buchanan did not pitch at all over the weekend.

There is more in-state action for the Panthers this week, playing the Clones in Ames Wednesday.

BTW, those with interest in MVC softball and access to WatchESPN via phone/tablet/Roku/etc can watch most games both live and via replay. It was amusing to watch the Shox beat up on Drake last weekend.

I just don't understand. UNI has a 5-0 lead into the 6th and we face bases loaded with no outs. Coach Jacobs makes no changes and we lose 6-5

                    WTF?

                    Please explain

The Sycamores looked like the 69 Mets in the 7th inning of game 3. 2 pitches that they smashed were not close to being strikes, ground ball single off the glove of a diving infielder, misjudged ball by the OF, recovered for the catch, but off balance for the throw. Not UNI SB? Also noticed we're 9th in the MVC for batting average, usually in the top half. I too wondered about bringing Buchanan in to pitch. Beat ISU on Wed!

True measure of a program's success is when the fan forums start second guessing the coaching decisions.

We have two or three starters batting under .200 also. Used to never see that. OTOH the staff ERA has been a pleasant surprise with Spencer. Pitching-wise we aren't missing Ross as much as I thought we would. We are REALLY missing her bat, as well as Wnek's.

Drake has started out the MVC 0-6 due to their stud pitcher Newman being unavailable (injury presumably). However, ISURed has taken up the slack by winning 2 out of 3 at Wichita

Another odd twist, turns out the Trees' head coach was fired a couple of days before we got there. The interim coach is in her first season at the college level, and the only other coach is a volunteer buddy of hers.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Assistant coach Tori Magner has been named the interim head coach for the Indiana State softball program, Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales announced Friday.

UNI Shortstop Sammey Bunch named MVC Player of the week. The freshman had a monster weekend against Evansville. Should be interesting how she does this weekend versus Southern Illinois.
