You've been really carrying the water for Farley lately. Objectively, what do you believe this season looks like?

With the coaching turmoil and the complete inability to make a decision for the last 5 years, I have no idea how we win more than 3 or 4 games. I mean, this is setting up to be the worst year since the early 80s....

We are grabbing coaches from Idaho State, UC-Davis and Tennessee Tech.

Those three programs were a combined have combined for 3 total winning seasons since 2009, and if we take out non-D1 games it might be 1 winning season.

Think about that. That's where we are getting our coaches.

We are no longer grabbing young coaches that are rocketing up the coaching ranks. We are grabbing coaches who can't keep jobs and terrible programs. That's not a good sign.

Hopefully players like Dunne, Weymiller, Allen, Browning, Graham, Fountain, Rima, James, Nissen, Sweeny, Twait, Carhart, Appleman, Woods, Douglas, Reth, Minniefield, Applegate, Chapple, Farley, Ferch, Neal, Thomas, Washington, Lynch, Campbell, Allen, Kuhter, and Errthum aren't practicing with the same negativity that most of us on here have.

Yes there are a ton of questions about our coaching staff, but we have a ton of returning talent, maybe these new coaches with be able to get out of their own way this year.

We didn't hire anyone from Tennessee Tech. Bond is from Tennessee-Martin and his last season as OC there they were 7-4.

I don't know much about Braun or McCann. Just because they came from UC-Davis doesn't mean they're not up and coming coaches. Fans at East Carolina, WKU or Minnesota could be asking the same questions on why they hired coaches from a 5-6 FCS team.

All I know about Braun and McCann is they're willing to make a big move to advance their careers. McCann was a finalist for the WR coaching job before Phenicie was offered, and when he got the Idaho State HC job we reached out to McCann again and he was still interested.

Well... I've been very critical of Farley on this board since the Joe Davis debacle. Openly and severely critical.

But I'm not going to wallow in negativity just out of spite.

The reality is we're working with a limited budget and FBS football added an extra paid coaching slot which directly impacted us.

So....you've gotta go out and hire guys who are willing to make a move and for jobs that aren't going to pay a ton of dough. That's the world we live in as an FCS football team. Other FCS teams are dealing with the same. Cal Poly is replacing on OC and DC.

Hopefully we've found some young guys who are hungry and can coach. And some salty old veterans as well. Some might actually be a big improvement versus their predecessor.

Not sure why you'd be so pessimistic as to think we can only win 3 games. We've got like 17 starters back if you count Sweeney and Reth. And loads of young talent.

I went ahead and ordered 4 season tickets. I don't think the sky is falling.

One of the coaches we hired is a former Notre Dame all-american who played 10 years in the NFL, coached 3 seasons for the Dolphins and left a job at Notre Dame to be our DB coach.

Not a bad resume...Eh?

Haven't heard too many positive comments on that hire on PN.

The fact he was an All American in college means nothing for a coaching resume.

He comes from Notre Dame - where it wasn't a coach. He was an analyst. He wasn't allowed to have any contact with players. Essentially his job was to watch film and tell whomever he reported too what he saw in the film and/or scout future opponents. His position is also called administrative assistant, advanced scout, quality control, etc... depending on the school. It's essentially a glorified GA position. That doesn't mean there isn't value and learning that takes place. It just means he has no exeperience actually coaching and recruiting at the college level. His job at Miami? He was an assistant position coach.

Hopefully he, and all coaches, are great and work out fantastically. None of my issues with their hiring has anything to do with them as a person.

It's just incredibly hard to get overly excited about replacing Paup with a DL coach from a 2 win program that gave up 37.1 points per game, 4.7 yards per rush, 199.5 yards rushing per game, 30 rushing touchdowns, had just 18 sacks, and allowed a 45% 3rd down conversion rate.

Or a WR coach from that same 2 win program that had only 1 WR with more than 30 catches, only 1 WR with more than 285 yards, and 2 TDs on the season.

Or a QB coach that has been at 11 schools in 25 years. 5 schools in the last 10 and seems to have as many stops in triple option offenses as pro style offenses. He seems to have done well at schools that run pro or spread style passing games, but after being in coaching since 1985 how has he never gotten above a MAC level job and been fired from Georgia State, UMASS and UT-Martin which were his last three stops. It's also important to take his numbers from UT-Martin with a grain of salt. He was facing OVC defenses.

Same story without OL coach. His bio reads well and he appears to develop ground moving OL, but he's been at EIU of the OVC and UNT in the Sun Belt. We saw what an EIU OL looks like in the UNIDome 2 years ago. We also saw UNT get beat by Portland State 66-7 2 years ago - that same UNI team that ran for 500 yards on in the playoffs. Also, our OL coach the last few years was garbage, so i guess he probably can't get worse.

Listen, I hope they work out. Believe it or not, I don't like being negative about the program. I really like Farley, but I'm starting to question if he should be leading the program much longer. We have as many seasons under .500 as playoff appearances the last 5 years, and we seem to have been getting worse, and more inconsistent, over that time frame

Sure, say the same thing about Minnesota or ECU reacting to coaches from a 5-6 FCS team coming in. The difference is those assistants showed results. Their position groups dominated and produced All Americans and NFL players. Paup has Xavier Williams, Isaac Ales, Karter Schult, etc... on his resume.

Lynch coached a defensive back field that sent all 4 players from one class into NFL camps - 2 of them being drafted. He was the assistant head coach his final 2 seasons here. His secondary set records for picks, pick sixes, PBUs, etc.. He produced 10 All American honors from his players at UNI.

Compare Paup's resume as a DL coach to Braun. Compare Lynch's resume as a DB coach to Burris. Slight difference.

Paup had no resume as a DL coach before he came to UNI. He had previously coached high school football.

Lynch's resume prior to UNI included no NFL experience...Or FBS experience...Or FCS experience. He did a couple years at a D2 called Lenoir-Rhyne. That's it.

The correct comparison will be to put these new coaches accomplishments when they LEAVE UNI against those of Paup and Lynch and other prior staff. Time will tell.

In the meantime, this board pissing misery all over every piece of news that comes out of the UNI-Dome is not helping in any way.

Someone answer this question - what does an OC on a triple option team actually do? Pick the starters, then what?

Will there be a meet-and-greet for the coaches at the Open Practice?

I mean for each other and the players!

I hear there is going to be a game of musical chairs. The last coach standing will be the new OC!

C'mon. You know Farley's got that rigged so he gets the last chair and still has his hands all over the O.
