  • 13 UNI players building a playground in Waterloo

    From the article:

"But the playground is going to get built anyway.

A bunch of football players from the University of Northern Iowa, led by a former Rock Island Alleman star, are building it for them.

The players aren’t being paid. In fact, they’re raising money for the project as well as providing all of the labor. They’re not getting any classroom credit.

They’re doing it because … well, it just sort of seemed like a good idea."

More information if anyone here is interested in donating to this project ...

Jacob Appleman (the player cited in the article) wrote that they are in the process of setting up an account for donations at Veridian Credit Union for this project.

In the meantime, he says that donations may be sent directly to Waterloo Leisure Services (that is the city parks depament) with the notation that the donation is specifically earmarked for the "Highland Park Project"

Jacob told me that they have now set up an "Highland Park Project Account" at Veridian Credit Union for donations to the UNI Sophomore Class Project. He said anyone could walk into any Veridian CU office and deposit a check as donation. If sending to VCU, probably best to go to the main office at:

        Veridian Credit Union
        P.O. Box 6000
        1827 Ansborough Ave
        Waterloo, IA 50704

        Or send directly to:

        Waterloo Leisure Services
        1101 Campbell Avenue
        Waterloo, Iowa 50701

and note that it is for the Hyland Park Project in either case.

An update ... the building begins:

"University of Northern Iowa football players stepped off the gridiron and onto a playground Thursday to make a difference in a Waterloo neighborhood.

More than 30 Panthers helped assemble a new purple-and-gold play structure in Highland Park as part of project the student athletes spearheaded to promote community involvement and build character."

Fantastic piece of work by the Panthers right there.

              Great work boys.

We're 1-0 before the season starts.
