  • Un-official Missouri Valley Competition thread

I figure that we could have a place to talk about other games going on in the Valley that aren't related to us. To start it off, let's take a look at these two games:

    Loyola 98, Drake 102

    and

    Southern Illinois 51, Bradley 60

    Discuss and/or mock these results.

Uh, Drake has scored 100+ in 2 straight games (101-69 vs. Mississippi Valley State)? This is after scoring 53 in an 11-point loss to Iona earlier this year. Is it possible they have figured something out with their interim coach?

If the Salukis lose consecutive games to Bradley and Drake (this Sunday), Barry Hinson will have to be talked off the cliff.

I always heard pretty good things about Drake's previous coach. Maybe some players and teams just click better with some coaches. Drake had a lot of close games last year, but tended to lose them. Nice to see them holding on for the win last night.

Is there something different that the new coach is doing? Or is this just a matter of fresh air.

I think this just shows that we are not in as dire of a position as many on here believe. It took Missouri State playing virtually a perfect half, with us playing about as worst of a half as we can to barely hang on to beat us in the second half. Bennett is starting to figure it out again, Klint will, Spencer has been solid all year and if Wyatt can get healthy we will be tough to beat. As long as the rest can figure out their roles we will be fine.

As much as we want the sky to be falling, it isn't, and I'm willing to bet that Missouri State game will be a spark this team needs.

Stolen from Drake website interim coach --Jeff Rutter assistant at UNI from 2003-06, where the Panthers compiled a 65-31 mark and made three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances under head coach Greg McDermott.

Rutter seems to have made a conscious choice to open things up. Giacolleti played a slow tempo. He is either on to something, or kids were just shooting lights out by chance. We shall see.

Ah yes, it must be the UNI experience that made the difference. Probably didn't learn so much from the other place he coached.

Mo State beats Indiana State in OT. They were up double digits in 2nd half but were still able to hold on for the W.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

Interesting they are having difficulty holding onto big leads.

They were 4-15 from 3, at home. They made 9 in the first half against us at McLeod.

So barring disaster, looks like Wichita is going to cream Bradley, and Illinois State doing the same to Loyola. It looks like Loyola isn't quite living up to their pre-conference snuff.

I think they lost a Marvin Singleton-type glue man right at the end of non-conference. They haven't ever really been big inside, so that hurts. Not that that made a difference against us last year....

Welp, Bradley just won @ Evansville. So we're worse than Bradley now. So... that's good.

Hard to believe that the way last year's team was playing by the end of the year, also had started Valley play 2-6. There were some serious doubts/concerns at that point when they were 10-11 overall. Somehow, someway, the guys figured it out and came together to put together an unforgettable run.

Granted, apples are comparing to oranges with the personnel changes that have taken place, but as frustrating as it is right now, this team is very capable of turning the corner.

Big game between the Shockers and Redbirds tonight.

I was looking at what each team would need to do in order to be in the talk for an at-large bid. It seemed like for either one, they would need to go at least 15-3 in the conference, and I'm not sure that would do it. The rpi wizard on rpiforecast.com was giving each one an RPI in the 30s/low 40s under that scenario. That's alright, but the problem would be neither one has any good wins.

Rpi is such a non factor, despite whtat the ncaa says, every year there's a small team that's got an RPI, of, like, 25, who gets left out because they needed to squeeze in the 4th worst ACC team.
