  • Coaching longevity at UNI

I wonder how many Division 1 programs have maintained the same head coaches for ten plus years in football, volleyball, MBB and WBB.

Football: Mark Farley, currently in 16th season
Volleyball: Bobbi Petersen, currently in 17th season
MBB: Ben Jacobson, entering 11th season
WBB: Tanya Warren, entering 10th season

    My guess would be zero.

Its absolutely one of the primary reasons we have had so much success in our athletic department. That type of continuity is unprecedented in todays college athletics.

According to my research, there are only 4 division 1 schools that can claim that feat:
      UNI, Michigan State, Villanova, Harvard

      UNI's coaches are listed above.

      Michigan State:
      • FB: Mark Dantonio, 10th season
      • VB: Cathy George, 12th season
      • MBB: Tom Izzo, 22nd season
      • WBB: Suzy Merchant, 10th season

      Villanova:
      • FB: Andy Talley, 32nd season
      • VB: Josh Steinbach, 10th season
      • MBB: Jay Wright, 16th season
      • WBB: Harry Perretta, 39th season

      Harvard:
      • FB: Tim Murphy, 23rd season
      • VB: Jennifer Weiss, 24th season
      • MBB: Tommy Amaker, 10th season
      • WBB: Kathy Delaney-Smith, 35th season

And you can cross Nova off that list after this year, Talley is retiring.

And we have kept a good number of assistants as well, volleyball has been the same forever, men's basketball, has had a little turnover but we've seemed to have the same guys come back year after year, football has had some long timers with a good mix of new guys, and wbb has had 2 of the assistants that worked for Tony.

Interesting that all four schools have one or more coaches currently in their 10th year thus barely making the list. Last year there would have been zero schools, this year there are 4, next year 3?

the ten-year mark is admitedly an arbitrary benchmark, as was the choice of sports. Though football and MBB are generally considered the two sports that get the most attention, and WBB and VB generally get the most attention for womens sports.

Last year there may have been other schools that met such criteria, but have changed one of those 4 coaches, and next year there may be others that qualify (I didn't really keep track of if any coaches were at the 9-year mark)

Good points, I didn't think that through very logically.
