  • MVC Swim/Dive Meet in Iowa City

Yes, you read that correctly. The Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving meet is in Iowa City this year!

After years of making the hike to Carbondale (which wasn't all bad as the parents made the most of it ), Coach Doug helped the other coaches see the light and helped UI make it happen.

Thursday 11am session includes prelims for 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, and 1 m. diving.

Thursday 6pm session includes finals for events listed above and the 200 Free Relay.

Friday 11am session includes prelims for 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and 3 m. diving.

Friday 6pm session includes finals for most of the events listed above, 3 m. diving (#9 to 16), and 400 Medley Relay.

Saturday 10am session includes prelims for 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 1650 Free.

Saturday 4pm session includes finals for 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 3 m. diving, and the 400 Free Relay.

We should be there for most of Friday and Saturday. Come on and make the short trip to Iowa City in order to cheer on the Panthers as they continue to build on the great step forward taken last year when they finished 3rd (their best finish ever).

With UNI the host MVC school, why is this in Iowa City? What is it about our facility that does not make it conducive to hosting this in CF?

That was my question as well.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

Have you seen the facility in Iowa City? It is world-class. USA Swimming and Diving has held major competitions there (this means that Olympic athletes came to Iowa City in February a few years ago for the event we attended).

Among other things, it has a full practice pool, a great scoreboard, and tons of seating. And a separate diving well, albeit with a big stain on the bottom.

UNI has a nice facility, but it is not sufficient for a conference meet. And there may only be a handful of facilities in the country that are better than Iowa City's.

Trust me, it is exceptionally good (and almost unbelievable) for the MVC meet to be held in Iowa City.

                Now, who is coming?

UNI doesn't have enough fan seating for a conference meet. The place is full when UNI swims a duel meet...

Just got home from work in time to see UNI win the 200 Free Relay.

Hannah Brummel got 3rd and Alyssa Deuso got 5th in 1 meter diving! Way to go Hannah and Alyssa.

Not sure all the scores are in, but it looks like UNI is in 3rd place only 2 points behind SIU!

We got to Iowa City in time for the 3 meter diving prelims. All three UNI divers made the finals with Emma Billerbeck moving from 9th place to 8th place on her final preliminary dive, bumping an SIU diver into the consolation finals. As UNI is competing with SIU for 2nd place overall, it was great to see Emma make her contribution by assuring that UNI will gain at least 2 more points on SIU in 3 meter diving. Great job Emma. Go Panthers.

UNI finished Friday in 3rd place with 402 points. SIU is in 2nd with 434, but they are within striking distance because Saturday is a strong day for UNI.

Here is the link to the latest story on the UNI athletics site:

And some highlights (and these are only the references to new records set!):

"In the 400 medley relay, the team of Katie Taylor, Veronica Herrmann, Crystal Florman and Aftin Phyfe nabbed two school records. Taylor's 100 backstroke swim, to lead off the relay, created a new school record at 54.68. The team would reset the UNI school record, timing in at 3:43.50."

"Taylor continued to dominate in the pool, resetting the UNI and MVC records in the 400 IM. Taylor swam a time of 4:17.54 to grab the first place finish and an NCAA B Cut."

"Florman made her mark in the 100 butterfly, creating a new UNI and MVC record with her preliminary time this morning. Florman also received a B Cut in the event, timing in at 53.86. Florman came back to win the event in the evening session, timing in at 54.21."

"Molly Lembezeder nabbed second place and a new UNI record in the 200 freestyle, timing in at 1:49.80. Phyfe had a top-8 finish, swimming in at 1:51.53."

Action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

A live-stream for each day of tournament action can be found on the MVC's YouTube page.

Re: MVC Swim/Dive Meet in Iowa City

The MVC meet is done and the Panthers ended with a strong 3rd Place finish. If not for a few late season injuries, we would have been in contention for 2nd Place.

                          1. Missouri State University 832.5
                          2. Southern Illinois University 649
                          3. University of Northern Iowa 615

Here is a link to the UNI website article. There was someone with a UNI shirt taking tons of video on the pool deck, so there should be some good stuff available somewhere.

                          Here are some highlights:

Breaking records is what Katie Taylor has been doing at the 2017 MVC swimming and diving championships. Taylor swam to another UNI, MVC and B Cut in the 200 backstroke, timing in at 1:57.20.

Molly Lembezeder defended her title in the 100 freestyle from a year ago, timing in at 49.97. Her preliminary swim this morning set a new school record at 49.89. Lembezeder's swim qualified her in the NCAA B Cut.

The Panthers team of Taylor, Florman, Phyfe and Lembezeder not only defended their title in the 400 freestyle relay, but reset the MVC record they set last year. The team swam a time of 3:22.01, also resetting the UNI school record.

Alyssa Deuso led the way on the 3-Meter boards, diving a 227.45 and finishing in fourth place. Hannah Brummel followed, diving a 222.45 for fifth and Emma Billerbeck rounded out the Panthers divers, scoring a 202.05 for seventh.

"We were the only school that had three in the finals of diving," commented diving coach Lori Meierbachtol. "We have experience now with Hannah and Alyssa being on the podium to help with us next year."

Katie Taylor won the MVC Freshman of the Year award for swimming.

Never miss out on a moment of action. Follow the UNI Panthers Swimming and Diving at unipanthers.com, @UNISwimming on Twitter and @uniswimdive on Instagram.

                          Great job ladies.

Oh yes. Lots. Once they got over griping about having to make the trip north (as if we hadn't made the trip south for years), they just couldn't stop talking about how nice the facility was. Finally, we had a venue that was appropriate for the occasion. That is no slam against the UNI facility, but Iowa's facility is just world-class and spacious. Even the touchpads seemed to work perfectly through the entire meet! Now, if we can just do something with that stain on the bottom of the diving well!
