  • UNI VB tournament

Panthers have hosted a volleyball tournament this weekend, with one match remaining, UNI taking on NDSU at 2:30 on sunday afternoon.

    UNI's matches:
    • UNI lost to Illinois State 2-3 (25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 29-27, 11-15)
Panthers looked a little sluggish after the big win over Iowa State and the Redbirds played a very good match. Their libero recorded 44 digs, which is the 5th highest total in the MVC, at least since the 25-pt format. This match opened up MVC play.
    • UNI swept Northwestern 3-0 (20, 20, 19)
    • UNI swept Syracuse 3-0 (16, 18, 18)
    • UNI swept NDSU 3-0 (9, 20, 18)

    Non-UNI matches:
    • Northwestern beat NDSU 3-1 (27-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22)
    • Northwestern beat Syracuse 3-2 (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 10-25, 15-9)
    • Illinois State swept Syracuse 3-0 (17, 22, 20)
    • Illinois State swept NDSU 3-0 (16, 22, 27)

UNI is the only team playing all 4 other teams (no ISU vs. NW or NDSU vs. Syr)

Illinois State won the tournament, going 3-0
    UNI finishes 2nd at 3-1
    Northwestern finished at 2-1
    NDSU finished at 0-3
    Syracuse finished 0-3

    Re: UNI VB tournament

UNI has played 7 matches over the past 9 days (Sept. 9-Sept. 17), and with tomorrow's match, that makes 8 matches in 10 days.

    That stretch includes:
    - 2 Big 12 teams (W vs. Iowa State, L @ Kansas)
    - 1 Big Ten team (W vs. Northwestern)
    - 1 MVC team (L vs. Illinois State)
    - 1 ACC team (W vs. Syracuse)
    - 1 WAC team (W @ UMKC)
    - 2 Summit League teams (W vs. UN-Omaha, W vs. NDSU)

four of those teams (Kansas, Iowa State, Northwestern, UMKC) are top-100 teams, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Illnois State moved up into the top 100

      Re: UNI VB tournament

UNI VB fell to 1-3 in MVC play with tonight's lost to Missouri State, which is the worst start to conference play since the MVC started sponsoring womens sports in 1992.

(their previous worst start was in 2007 when they lost at MSU, won at WSU, and lost to Creighton. But then they went on to win their next 3, and 12 of their next 13).

All three of their conference losses this season (Illinois State, @ SIU, Missouri State) have been five-setters.

Panthers are pretty much out of contention for any chance at an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, which means that their only chance to qualify will be to win the MVC tournament to get the auto-bid. But UNI is hosting the conference tournament this year, so if they can right the ship and get hot down the stretch, they hold a decent chance of pulling it off.

And two of the conference losses at home - ouch.

In other news, the SB team lost the first game of the All-Iowa Classic fall exhibition tournament 4-3, to an Iowa team that lost 39 games last spring

UNI unofficially beat Iowa state this afternoon 7-6. Keep in mind Coach is playing everyone 2-3 innings. UNI has 9 freshman on the team.

Yeah, plus I'd forgotten we'd lost to Iowa last spring, *with* Ross & Wnek out there. No point in getting worked up about fall SB one way or another, except that it's nice to have a good showing vs the other in-state schools.

I did see most of UNI-Drake Sunday, appeared Varriano caught the whole game or most of it, and that the Krodingers stayed at SS and CF. Was a bit surprised that Kennedy Bailey didn't see much action.

                  Re: UNI VB tournament

Happened to catch the last two sets of SIU-Drake Friday night. The Salukis have some hitters, we did well to take them to 5 sets at their place IMHO. Their setter had a triple double but had to leave late with a hand injury, don't know how serious.

                    Re: UNI VB tournament

UNI has struggled against SIU since Justin Ingram has come in and gotten that program into shape. We definitely have the talent to beat them, but we have to avoid shooting ourselves in the foot with unforced errors and keep the Salukis from gaining momentum with long runs.

Should be a good match tonight. And MSU beat WSU last night, which brought the Shockers back into a three-way tie (WSU, MSU, SIU) atop the conference standings at 8-2, with UNI just a match back at 7-3. If UNI can win tonight, it will put them just half a game off the lead (and intensify the log-jam atop the standings with 4 teams within a half game)

                      Re: UNI VB tournament

Interesting that we clobbered SIU in the three sets we won, but the E.D.'s showed what they can be when they start getting kills, which then gets their blocking going. A fun team to follow for their fans. We have a very nice team, well-balanced and probably a bit better defensively. It sure looks like any of the top 4 teams can win the conference tournament, and as we saw Loyola can be tough.

                        Re: UNI VB tournament

losing Viggars was definitely a major blow for SIU. The Salukis had been running a 6-2 system all year, with Viggars being the primary setter when she was in the back row, but when she rotated to the front she became a hitter (with Kaminsky taking primary setter duties in those rotations).

So without Viggars, they not only lose a setter, but also one of their top hitters, their most efficient server, and a significant contributer to digs and blocks. Plus they had to switch their whole system to a 5-1, all in the course of 21 hours without much of any practice time.

But a win is a win, and it is nice to see UNI back within striking distance of the conference lead after the tough start.

Next week will be a huge challenge as well as a huge opportunity to move up the standings.

                          Re: UNI VB tournament

UNI volleyball gets a big win tonight in Wichita, to move into second place in the conference standings, half a game behind Missouri State (where the Panthers play tomorrow night). With a win in Springfield, UNI will claim the conference lead.

Elsewhere, SIU lost to Loyola at home. Viggars still being out with the hand injury really hurts them. the Saluki loss creates a bit of seperation between the top 3 (MSU, UNI, WSU) and SIU, but it could hurt those teams in terms of at-large bids to the NCAA tourney, since there is an RPI bonus for "top 50" wins, and SIU had been right in the 50 range prior to their recent losses.

And Evansville got their first conference win this season, squeaking out a 5-setter at home against Bradley.
