    Re: MVC Swim/Dive Meet

News flash: UNI in third with 600+ points (best ever by more than 200 points).

SIU won by 0.5 points over Missouri State. UNI's breakout performance opened the opportunity for Mo State to not win for the first time in 8 years.

    Highlights later.

          Re: MVC Swim/Dive Meet

Alright. We are back home and settled down after a great time in Carbondale. 28 of the 32 student athletes on the team had family there to cheer for them (others had to choose between events of other children). Most of us went out for dinner together after each evening's competition and we took over the conference hotel on Friday night for our pizza party.

Our fans are so great. They cheer louder for someone getting second place in a B Final than most other fans do for winning an A Final.

And, of course, the dad's Friday night tradition of chest-painting continues (with a great little brother added in). Unfortunately, UNIdaughter and UNImom vetoed my participation, so you won't find me in the video.

We are going to miss our annual Panther pilgrimage to Carbondale.

Now, on to the highlights from Saturday:

Rachel Siebenaller finished 11th and Meredith Gorman 14th in the 1650 Free. Both earned team points for UNI.

Aftin Phyfe finished 3rd in the 200 Back and broke her own school record. Madison Rinaldi won the B Final and finished 9th and Sierra Sachtjen 12th.

Molly Lembezeder and Crystal Florman took 1st and 2nd in the 100 Freestyle. Autumn Roepsch took 14th and Abby Meyer 15th to earn team points for UNI. It is so fun to have the fastest sprinters.

Veronica Herrmann finished 1st in the 200 Breaststroke and received a second NCAA B Cut (which means she may be invited to compete in NCAA Zones). She also broke her own school record and is the first Panther ever to earn two NCAA B Cuts.

Olivia Knowles finished 8th in the 200 Breaststroke and Jill Georgen 14th with a new PR.

Taylor Ostrowski set a new PR finishing 9th in the 200 Butterfly and Stephanie Jackson 12th.

Allie Bey took 4th in the 3-meter diving finals, Sarah Kemp 5th, and Alyssa Deuso 7th. Hannah Brummel had already finished 9th by winning the B Final. Fantastic finish by the divers earning 52 team points in this event.

Crystal Florman, Aftin Phyfe, Autumn Roepsch and Molly Lembezeder finished 1st in the 400 Free Relay. And they set a MVC meet record.

What a great day for UNI Swimming & Diving! There were so many achievements that I am not at all confident that I got them all (probably overlooking some PRs and school records).

Here is the link to the UNI story about Saturday, including a link to official final results.

              Re: MVC Swim/Dive Meet

Coach Doug really summed it up well in the UNI article link below. "There are so many highlights from this week," said Head Coach Doug Humphrey. "The excitement from one event snowballed into all the events."

              Honors for the Panthers include:

1st Team All Conference: Crystal Florman, Veronica Herrmann, Molly Lembezeder, Madison Rinaldi, Autumn Roepsch, Rachel Siebenaller, and Aftin Phyfe.

Honorable Mentions: Allie Bey, Stephanie Jackson, Sarah Kemp, Olivia Knowles, and Alyssa Deuso.

We were all hoping, but not getting our hopes too high, for the coach-of-the-year awards, then . . .

Lori Meierbachtol was announced as Diving Coach of the Year for having 4th, 5th, 9th, and 11th finishers in 1 Meter and 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th in 3 Meter.

Then Doug Humphrey was announced as Coach of the Year for what SwimSwam.com called "the meteoric" improvement of the UNI program.

It was fantastic to see our coached honored for their great effort and tremendous accomplishments.

The team really pulled together so well. There was nearly as much excitement for a B Final (events to determine #9 to 16) as an A Final (for #1 to 8).

Up Next. Senior divers Allie Bey and Sarah Kemp head to the Zone "D" Diving Championships, March 7-9 in College Station, Texas. NCAA Championships will be held March 17-19 in Atlanta, Georgia.

                Re: MVC Swim/Dive Meet

                Final Meet Results:

                799.50 Southern Illinois
                799.00 Missouri State
                627.00 Northern Iowa
                454.50 Illinois State
                305.00 Arkansas-Little Rock
                263.00 Evansville

The UNI finish was the school's best by almost 200 points (previous best was 428.50 in 2015).

And while Southern Illinois did much to earn the conference title for themselves, I think it was the "meteoric" improvement of UNI that really opened up the opportunity for SIU to beat Missouri State (who had won the last 8 in a row and 11 of the last 12). The incredible effort of the Panthers, such as in the relays, really mixed up the way everyone else was earning points. When we won a relay, we earned 40 points, second place earned 34 points, and third place 32. This meant that the second place finisher picked up only 2 extra points on the third place finisher rather than 6 if they finished first and second (like previous years). Or if one of our divers had bumped SIU's diver from 2nd, Mo State would have won the entire meet. The SIU and Mo State coaches will be dreaming about "what if's" for the next year.

Coach Doug's "what if's" are all about next year. He predicted that we would be battling Illinois State for 3rd place this year, but we ended up closer to 2nd than 4th! And the "meteoric" rise isn't done!

Here is a nice article written for the culmination of the MVC meet:

The Southern Illinois Salukis have unseated the 8-time MVC Champion Missouri State Bears by half a point to bring the Missouri Valley Conference title back to Carbondale in 2016.

Thanks for all the reporting of S&D for the past 4 years and especially this year UNIDad. We don't often get to hear much of the less major sports, it was great having you keep us informed. Maybe you could continue that in the future even though one diver of particular interest to you personally is moving on?

At the team banquet, I will try again to recruit some of the other team parents to join PantherNation.com. It really does draw you into the depths of Panther fandom (for good and bad).

Even though UNIdaughter is finishing her athletic career with NCAA Zones in a few weeks, it will probably be a long, slow process of weaning me off PantherNation.com.

Although I will wear cardinal and gold for football games in Ames, I will still be wearing purple and gold next year when UNI comes to Ames for the swim/dive meet. You can take the UNIdaughter out of UNI, but you can't take the UNI out of UNIdad.
