  • VB on the Wichita/Missouri road trip

Panther volleyball has what is normally their toughest road trip of the season, traveling to Wichita to face the Shockers tonight (Fri.), then heading to Springfield to take on the Missouri State Bears Sat. night.
(though there will be some other challenging road trips this season).

Tonight, WSU is having their "Dig PinK" night for cancer awareness, as well as "kids night" and some other promotions designed to get a big crowd.
In a rarity, BOTH UNI and WSU are wearing pink jerseys tonight.

UNI's usual libero, Amie Held is not traveling with the team this weekend (no word on reason), so Ashlee Sinnott dons the libero jersey tonight and true freshman Delany Bolton is into the subbing rotation.

In the first set, WSU jumps out to an early lead, but UNI fights back to tie it up around the 14 point mark, and continue to take a 22-16 lead. Shockers narrow the deficit, but the Panthers are able to hold on for a 25-21 win in the first frame.

second set starts out close, bouncing between a slight UNI lead and ties, through 17 a piece. Then WSU gets a run going and the Panthers get a bit flustered. Shockers take the set 25-19 to go into the intermission tied at one set apiece.

third set: another close one through the early stages with lots of ties. Panthers finish it off with an 8-2 run (including winning set point on serve, which seems to be a rarity for this team) to win 25-19 to go up two sets to one.

In the fourth set, the Panthers come out strong and the Shockers sputtered. UNI wins the set going away 25-13 to take the match 3 sets to one. It is the sixth consecutive match that UNI has taken from WSU in Wichita

          Elsewhere tonight in MVC action:
Indiana State hosted Illinois State. Sycamores hung tough in the first two sets (24-26, 25-27), but the Redbirds still pulled off the sweep to maintain their unblemished record in Valley play this season.
Missouri State had an easy home sweep over Drake.
Loyola pulls off a 3-1 road victory at SIU
Evansville sweeps Bradley at home, but the third set went to an epic 78 points with Evansville finally winning the marathon 40-38. crazy

E'ville vs. Bradley...wow! That would've been a sight to see. Almost 2 sets wrapped in 1

Health issues have kept me away from following the VB team this season. Good win over the Shockers. Go Panthers.

Man, Illinois State may be the team to beat this year. They are rolling teams left and right. Oct 17 in Normal will be a tall order for the team.

Panthers play terribly in the first set at MSU, and get rolled 14-25
they get off to a slow start in the second too, trailing by 6, but they are able to claw back and win the second 25-16 to tie it up going into the break.

                      UNI takes the third 25-19
then gets shellacked in the fourth 13-25
but rebound in the 5th 15-11 to win the set and go to 5-0 in the Valley to move back into a tie with Illinois State atop the conference standings.

nice weekend for the Panthers! It looks like, even in a down year (UNI standards, of course) the Panthers will be in the hunt for the conference title.

Amie Held had knee surgery (hence why she didn't make the trip). Something to do with bursitis or bursa sac. (my medical knowledge is quite limited).

looks like she will be out 3-6 weeks
