  • MVC Swim/Dive in Carbondale

The Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships start tonight (Wednesday) in Carbondale.

Our women started their move up in the conference rankings last year and may well move up at least another spot this year.

    Go Panthers.

      Re: MVC Swim/Dive in Carbondale

Had some good finishes so far. Veronica Herman got 4th in the 100 Breaststroke. for the highest individual finish so far. Divers took 5, 6, 13, and 16 on 1 meter, so all scored points for the team (places 1 to 3 are taken each year by Chinese divers who are 100 points better than everyone else).

Evansville has been stronger than expected and has kept a decent-sized gap ahead of us in team points. Looking forward to next year when they lose several key seniors and we get some great freshmen, including one who they say has already swam fast enough in high school to have won the MVC this year.

The competition has been very strong this year. Lots of MVC meet records. And lots of UNI records being set, as well as lots of personal bests. Proud of the women.

More prelims this morning and finals later this afternoon.

Hannah Brummel, freshman from Cedar Falls, dialed it up and finished 3rd in 1 meter and 4th in 3 meter consolation finals (11th and 12th in scoring). Solid contribution ahead of her seeding which means more points for UNI.

Jessica Misra, freshman from Ames, finished 8th in 1 meter and 7th in 3 meter consolation finals (16th and 15th in scoring). She struggled a little with early dives, but finished strong on 1 meter with a dive score of 40 and 3 meter with dive scores of 39, 40, and 36.

Allie Bey and Sarah Kemp compete in the 3 meter finals tonight. Battling for 4th place in what we call "1st in the American Division" since there are 3 incredible Chinese divers from SIU and ISUr who always take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Are there really only five Valley teams that have swimming? And Arkansas-Little Rock is "in the Valley" as a sixth team?

Yes. It seems surprising to me too. Makes me wonder if it is a sport that most schools think they need men's and women's to be cost effective, so they don't do either.
