  • New Drake Coach - Craig Smith

The DMR's website says Drake is going to name South Dakota's Craig Smith as their next head coach. Drake does have some talent returning in the backcourt, so he'll have a few pieces to work with his first year. That assumes everyone stays, or that he wants them to stay.

Jeff Rutter seemed to do OK with hand he was dealt, but ultimately had too big a hole to climb out of. I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere.

Didn't see South Dakota at all this year, except for their game against Iowa in the NIT, where they gave Iowa a run for their money, and I can't imagine South Dakota has too many players better than Drake, a lot of it has to be coaching. This move could have potential.

OK, just read that he posted on his twitter that he's staying. This had to be very far along to generate the "he's gone" stories from multiple news outlets. Looks like something must have fallen apart last minute, or his family got cold feet about a move, etc. Seems like a Drake like move, too.

imagine if "news outlets" actually waited to report news instead of speculation and gossip.

Andy Garman seems to be a pretty good Drake source. He tweeted that this in on Coach Smith, not Drake. Change of heart, for whatever reason. Also, others are tweeting (linked to Garmans') that the SDU players had to wait 90 minutes for a hastily called meeting with their coach so he could inform them he's staying. You could do a lot of speculating as to what was going on during those 90 minutes (Coach going back and forth about staying/leaving, etc.), but none of us will know for sure.

Or during those 90 minutes USD was offering him a better contract.

It sounded like he had already decided to flip, so the new contract thing would already be agreed to, at least in principal. Who knows?

As for someone above mentioning media speculation, I agree. Especially concerning the mainstream news media. Throw ESPN in there too...they're almost as much of a bunch of jacka$$ed clowns as the news networks and newspapers. This, however, sounds like it had real substance. He was going to Drake, until some new contractual or family thing changed his mind.

That is because media has lost sight of actually utilizing basic principles of journalism. It is all about sensationalism.

In their defense, he said yes.

I don't think anybody thought that USD could find money that quickly to get him to stay.

Maybe Smith did a D&B check on D++++ and found out they're flat broke.

Register reporting that Furman's Niko Medved has accepted the Drake job.

Not a terrible hire, honestly, in the four years he's been at Furman, he's taken the team from 10th to 10th to tied for 3rd to tied for 1st.

Although it's interesting that he just signed a contract in January to stay with Furman until 2022. Wonder what the buy out was.
