  • PSC Golf Outing 2022

Today was the annual PSC golf outing in Ankeny, IA. It usually is a full house packed event with David Harris and several coaches in attendance. In years past they would provide a lunch and a hefty amount of drinks for all of the golfers as well as a dinner and raffle after the outing.

The Covid year knocked off some of the frills which is to be expected, but the event was a shell of its former self today. I would say half the teams that typically registered for the event registered today. The bookstore usually sends a trailer with merchandise to purchase as well. Not this time. There was no raffle, no prizes to be won, David Harris was not there, nor was any coach that I could tell.

Was there something going on today that I’m missing? I know we have a lot of new people in this department and the weather wasn’t great, but my goodness it was a sad attempt to collect money for a university that desperately needs as much as it can get.

    We're not even trying anymore.

Maybe hire a few more 22 year old kids, that ought to do it.

We’re fine. Everything is fine. Our athletic department is working perfectly.

We’ve been told this repeatedly by a select group of posters on this forum.

I'd be prepared to believe the days of a golf outing being a great driver of funds are over... If there was any sort of visible plan for something new, that might connect with younger alums. Doesn't even have to be in-person.

For example... A social media campaign where alums challenge their college buddies to join them in sending $5 or $10 to the PSC, preferably via Venmo or something really easy that doesn't require filling out a lengthy pledge form. Lots of loosely affiliated alums don't want to join the PSC, but generally support the Panthers and would give a small amount as part of a social campaign where they can be seen as being mini "boosters."

Old white guys still have lots of money. Golf outings aren't going anywhere and need to continue to be a big driver of revenue.

Between the caravan being a giant flop, not showing up to the golf outing and getting literally nothing done on the five year master plan we're obviously in great shape as a department and certainly have the right leadership in place.

People should work harder if they want to be fans. Have to earn it.

You've just got to make it easy for people to be supporters in their own way... Not just the way it's been done for several years, at precisely the prescribed amounts with follow-up phone calls and pledge cards. That stuff (and golf outings, etc.) are still important, but just make it easy to be a casual Panther fan.

Curious about this… I only attended the West DesMoines event. While not to pre-pandemic numbers, 2022 attendance was far better than 2021. Add in the fact the 2021 Caravan was held in place of doing both the Caravan and TC’s Tailgate (COVID related), and I would say it’s great news to see this year’s attendance. In addition, although the AD would have you believe otherwise, the Caravan is primarily organized by the Alumni Association, not the PSC or AD.

That all said, I’m disappointed the AD sent no one to a long time event which has been very profitable in the past. I’ll bite my tongue on reasons attendance is down for the DesMoines golf event.

They had 20 people show up in Sioux City and less than 50 in Fort Dodge. The Toppling Goliath and WDSM ones were well attended. I can't figure out why they skipped Cedar Rapids and Dubuque.

I hadn’t heard those numbers. Disappointing, but understandable knowing the Association’s general activity in SC/FD. The long term goal is to move the event around the state which is the reason for those locations. Dubuque wasn’t extremely well attended in the past as well.

I don’t know if they will ever skip the DesMoines location. We must grow the purple circle in the capital city to be successful so it’s become a focus point for the university - I’m told there are more alums in Polk/Dallas counties than Blackhawk.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. The migration to Des Moines from the rest of the state is nuts and you're absolutely right that we have to at least have a presence in the Des Moines metro if we're going to survive as a department or a university. I'm amazed by how well Iowa State has done there in the last decade.

In regards to the golf outing, I don't think it made sense to have the Des Moines one the same day as the Quad Cities one. This is likely why the Des Moines one was toned down a bit. There was really good attendance and quite a bit of coach representation at the QC one and they did do a raffle and live auction which brought in a good amount. Harris and coaches also did speak after the dinner.

This at least makes some sense as to why it was such a small group and nobody was there, but man that seems like poor planning.

In the 21-22 UNI Fact Book (located at https://ie.uni.edu/uni-facts - it is a .pdf), on page 42, "Alumni by Iowa County 2021" lists 13,860 for Polk and 12,672 for Black Hawk.

Honestly, I question that there are only 12k alumni in Black Hawk county, though. Or that there are only 78k in the entire state.

How in the world would they let that happen? Are we not talking about a division I athletic department. Unbelievable and unacceptable.

Hold up. We held two golf outings on the same day? What? Why? Who the **** approved that?
