The I-AA Difference
With the Northern Iowa/Iowa State game looming large on the horizon, the issue of I-AA football in relation to it's "bigger brother" has become somewhat of a hot-button issue. Is I-AA really that far removed from some of the lower-tier I-A teams? Many across the country are beginning to slowly come to the conclusion that if North Dakota State were to play Ball State five times, NDSU would emerge victorious at least three of those times, especially if the series were a home-and-home one.
Here are the facts. I-AA has won six games over I-A teams this year compared with just two in 2005. A trend that should not be ignored last year and this year is that something is generally missing from the I-A vs. I-AA ideal: blowouts and "Warm up games."
One reporter who worked out east lambasted the prospect of Maryland playing William and Mary. Genuinely unprofessional things were said about the instution in Williamsburg, Virginia. Marlyand then found out that their 2nd string wouldn't see any playing time against W&M in a collar-pulling 27-14 affair.
