Neal Earns STATS FCS Honorable Mention
Oct. 23, 2017 Football
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The accolades continue to roll in for Northern Iowa junior Rickey Neal, with the Panther defensive end earning STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention, the national office announced on Monday.
The news comes on the heels of Neal claiming the Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Week honor on Sunday. Neal also nominated for this week's FCS Football HERO of the Week award, an award from HERO Sports. Fans can cast their vote for Neal, here.
Last week against Youngstown State, Neal earned a career-high 3.5 sacks in the upset win over the No. 9 Penguins. The 10 sacks on Saturday came within one quarterback takedown of tying the program record, while the mark is tied for the highest in the FCS this season with Eastern Washington (Sept. 16 – Fordham).
The Racine, Wis., native finished Saturday's game with six total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and one hurry to go along with his 3.5 sacks. The 3.5 sacks in one game ranks as the third most in one game for any FCS player this season.
Neal leads the Panthers with 6.5 sacks this season, while adding 23 tackles for the year. The defensive end's 9.0 tackles for loss this season is also a team high.
