For those of you that were around at the time, I was just wondering....why did we build the dome in the first place? It seems like a strange move for a D2 school in 1976.

Re: The Dome
That was a link to a very well done history. Mr. Peterson's photo history of the school is a great book available at the bookstore.
We needed both a new basketball arena and a bigger football stadium. This got it done all in one.

Re: The Dome
One of the faculty members who was on the orginial group that did the planning said the orginial plans called for a complete swimming arena to be under one side of the stadium, that the north end would have had glass fronted offices from top to bottom, and that the seating on the other side would slide under the other half so they could play baseball/softball inside, but those plans got changed because they wanted to break ground and that donations were not coming in as high as they expected.
It did give us a multiple use facility that we desperately needed and now with the McLeod Center + the PE complex have we come a long, long way !"I know the CUBS will play in the world series one of these years, I only hope I'm still alive to see it !"

Re: The Dome
while it won't be glass fronted offices top to bottom, the north end will look pretty cool once they finish the whole project over there. With the new locker room on the first level, some sort of meeting room/suite/office on the second level, and then a walkway connecting the east and west concourses on the third level.
