it is a predicament, charge the students more. Or pass it on to the taxpayers. Both have large groups that have no interest in sports.

What is the solution to funding athletics? Raising prices will result in lower fan turnout. Should the students pay more, if so, how much? The taxpayers? Have the state / BOR create a rule that ISU and Iowa each pay a percentage of their revenue to keep UNI sports afloat? Make it mandatory that Iowa and ISU alternate playing UNI in football each year, giving UNI the money that usually goes to out of state teams?

The extreme majority of schools in D1 don't even keep men's basketball.
ZERO schools under D1 keep athletics.
Athletics in general just goes away

I think criticisms of schools spending money on their athletic programs ignore far too many of the benefits. It's not just a simple revenue vs cost consideration. How much money did the theatre department cost? The robotics team? How much is spent on public art? Landscaping? Intramural sports?
These things all enhance the college experience and attract students. They contribute to the community as a whole and not always directly. You don't have to attend a play or be one of the actors due your school to benifit from have a theatre program.
Are those benefits sometimes exaggerated? Of course, but college sports weren't conceived with profit in mind to begin with. To cut them because they don't turn a profit seems ridiculous.
