  • NBC story about student fees funding D1 athletics

With searchable database. UNI comes in at $207/year for the '17-'18 school year, about 10% of the AD budget.

NBC News found that college students are paying a rising cost, sometimes thousands of dollars, to support athletic programs — fees that don't always appear on their tuition bills.
    "Well, that escalated quickly."

It is completely ridiculous how much some universities charge students to fund athletics programs.

That’s quite the bargain compared to the other schools in the conference.

it is a predicament, charge the students more. Or pass it on to the taxpayers. Both have large groups that have no interest in sports.

Or force athletic departments to actually be closer to self-sustaining, which would mean limiting spending in most programs.

So, you're proposing the elimination of sports everywhere below the Power 5 Football level?

So I understand and get why schools at UNI's level is charging students. But why the hell are programs like NC State charging?

I'm not proposing anything. just pointing out the third option besides swindling students and government welfare handouts for collegiate athletic programs.

There is no such thing as self sustaining for 99.9% of all of college athletics. So say goodbye to your precious volleyball program if you want to go this route, Jay.

What is the solution to funding athletics? Raising prices will result in lower fan turnout. Should the students pay more, if so, how much? The taxpayers? Have the state / BOR create a rule that ISU and Iowa each pay a percentage of their revenue to keep UNI sports afloat? Make it mandatory that Iowa and ISU alternate playing UNI in football each year, giving UNI the money that usually goes to out of state teams?

All of these are terrible ideas and this post should be deleted. We don't want their money, they have no obligation to provide us with anything and its stuff like this that gives them all the ammo about 'funding our programs'. Stop it.

UNI gets to keep men's basketball and maybe wrestling. Football can be kept if we play 3 FBS OOC games every year.

The extreme majority of schools in D1 don't even keep men's basketball.

ZERO schools under D1 keep athletics.

Athletics in general just goes away

I think criticisms of schools spending money on their athletic programs ignore far too many of the benefits. It's not just a simple revenue vs cost consideration. How much money did the theatre department cost? The robotics team? How much is spent on public art? Landscaping? Intramural sports?

These things all enhance the college experience and attract students. They contribute to the community as a whole and not always directly. You don't have to attend a play or be one of the actors due your school to benifit from have a theatre program.

Are those benefits sometimes exaggerated? Of course, but college sports weren't conceived with profit in mind to begin with. To cut them because they don't turn a profit seems ridiculous.
