  • Courier: “ David Harris, UNI in uncharted waters with NIL ruling”

“Since July 1 the college landscape has become a new world for athletic directors, school administrators, head coaches and — most importantly — student-athletes.

It’s been exactly a month since student-athletes have been allowed to make money off their name, image and likeness. How to educate those athletes on the changing rules, in particular at the University of Northern Iowa, is the priority for now.”

Entire article, including UNI’s eight-point NIL document for student-atheletes:

    "Well, that escalated quickly."

    UNI NIL document
    1. Student-athletes may not be compensated for attending or participating in athletics at the University of Northern Iowa.
    2. Student-athletes may secure representation to assist in marketing their ability to be compensated for their name, image and likeness. Please note, representation may only be secured to assist with matters involving name, image and likeness, and not to secure professional contracts in their sport.
    3. Student-athletes may not promote products or services that would violate applicable laws, NCAA or conference rules, University policy or university contracts.
    4. Student-athletes may not use any UNI intellectual property, including registered trademarks or logos, without receiving prior written permission.
    5. Student-athletes may not miss class or required athletically related activities to participate in promotional activities, and in-person NIL activities are not permitted during team travel.
    6. Be mindful that engaging in promotional activities may affect non-athletic related financial aid, such as Pell Grant eligibility.
    7. You should secure NIL agreements in writing and provide a copy to your sport administrator within seven days of signing an agreement
    8. The athletics department and/or University employees may not arrange NIL opportunities for student-athletes.

I was kinda just hoping the letter would just be "have fun, don't break the law." Whatever it takes to get more talent to CF.

my impression was this letter just summarizes the restrictions already in place to help student athletes stay in compliance with the NCAA eligibility regulations, copyright/trademark laws, and the like. I don't think it really adds any additional restrictions.

So, what are the "NCAA or conference rules, University policy or university contracts?"

Can a player be hired to promote CBD products, alcohol, gambling, or strip clubs?

my guess is: no, no (although if the university can advertise beer perhaps the student athletes can too), definitely not, and maybe but the university would probably discourage that

              Gambling - no
              CBD - no
Strip clubs - I would imagine there isn't an athletic department around that would approve that
              Booze - no

There's already been warnings sent out to a ton of kids who signed with Barstool and had to redo those deals because Barstool has a gambling side to them.

So, what are the actual "NCAA or conference rules, University policy or university contracts?"

There are bound to be all sorts of companies (and players) that try to bend the rules. For instance, can North Carolina State hire North Carolina basketball players to refer to them as the "second best program in the state" (with a not-so-subtle shot at Duke).

It's the wild, wild west. Every school is making their own rules and the only things that are not going to be approved are your obvious ones. The school is going to let kids make money if they at all possibly can.

As far as your example, I guess they could but why would the North Carolina players take that deal? Kids are smart. They've watched pro athletes and they know how to market themselves.

The UNI NIL policy states: "Student-athletes may not promote products or services that would violate applicable laws, NCAA or conference rules, University policy or university contracts."

Surely there is some definition, criteria, or examples of "university policy" to give meaning to the statement? It can't truly be a wild west situation, can it?

It pretty much is. Steer clear of booze, drugs and hookers and you're good to go. Kids are smarter than that though, we need to give them more credit and know that they are going to make the right decisions as to what they put their face on.

and yet there is booze (and advertising for booze) in the stadiums. Seems rather hypocritical.
(there might be drugs and hookers in the stadiums too, but not quite as obvious)

Yep...Nothing like that 18-year-old freshman defensive back out there posting about how much he loves Grey Goose and Coors Light to an audience of largely teenage followers.

not all collegiate athletes are below the age of 21
