  • Uni @ sdsu - 10/26/13

Past time to turn the page and look forward.
Both teams are trying to come out of their tailspins, and I'm not sure anyone on either side knows just who will "show up" for this game.

One thing that will be a factor will be the field conditions. South Dakota State is the only MVFC team that has a natural grass field surface. UNI has played on grass at Iowa State and Northern Colorado (at least according to wiki), but SDSU's field is always hella torn up by this point in the season, especially since they also play highschool games there (there's one there tonight).

    Both teams suck.

The grass will be 19" long, and UNI will only be able to dress 21 players due to injuries. Tyler Seivertsen will be forced to start at QB and he will then go 1-42 passing for 99 yards with a TD to David Johnson, which sends a 7-7 game into OT before we inevitably lose.

Speaking of David Johnson, he looked much closer to his old self last Saturday. A healthy DJ can win this game by himself for us.

Remember he was running against the pup defense and they prove every week they cannot stop the run.

We have a defense that can stop the run and practice every day tackling Zenner, most likely the best RB in FCS if not the most accomplished. He is a hard runner and has some great burst to outrun the second level.

Johnson looks like a pretty good back, but my money is on Zenner being a bigger factor.

David Johnson will be the best football player on the field Saturday. Doesn't mean he'll have the best game, many factors attribute to those stats, but DJ has been the best RB in the league the past few seasons not named Shakir Bell (pre-disappearance due to injuries). The sad thing is that somehow UNI's offense has forgotten how to do its job these past few weeks and he has been much easier to stack up against.

Zenner had the rushing title in ALL of the FCS and in comparative games did better last year than Bell and DJ. Bell proved to have durability problems which has to factor in to your evaluation of him. Was DJ 3rd in the Valley last year and currently second this year? Haven't you noticed how teams have torched the pups the last few years running the ball? Of course he had a good game against them. And having one good game against the Clones doesn't mean anything. They would finish fourth or lower in the Valley this year.

Bluster, bluster, bluster. Are we playing NDSU or SDSU this week? Doesn't seem to matter, the bravado's about the same from a section of their fanbase. Guess this is kind of a small sample size, though. Where's the rest of your fanbase? Are they as uninterested in this game as most of us are?
Give us a yell, HO! The purple and the gold
              Victory for U-N-I!

Find out what the other team wants to do, then take it away from them.

Already on to basketball is the truth - going for three trips to the NCAA tourney in a row. The last two were fun, time to make a run.

Still a chance to make the FB playoffs though, so the fans are still watching. Should be 12k at CAS which is good considering there are only seats for 10k. Fun environment and really a one of a kind outdoor experience you can't get at the other MVFC Dakotas or IA teams.

has a Summit League team ever gotten a win in the NCAA tourney?
I guess it's only been a few years since the namechange from the Mid-Con
but I don't think any of the current Summit members have ever gotten a tourney win

Zenner is a fine back, in fact, he's really good. He's not a better player than DJ is.

DJ is bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic, more versatile, incredible catching the ball, etc.

Our fan base is growing and getting better. The new outdoor stadium graciously provided by a wealthy donor and former Jack FB defensive lineman will most likely seat 20k range and will immediately be the best in the Valley. We have an advantage that there is no competition in our state for fans. The usd alumni don't care about their teams and don't show up. Spend 5 minutes in a mall in Sioux Falls (our biggest city) and you see Jacks gear everywhere. SDSU alumni are on board and even people that aren't alumni are jumping on the bandwagon. We are the main attraction in the area and the State's biggest University. It is a huge advantage and over the last 10 years we have capitalized on it.
That is why it is not unrealistic to speculate that NDSU and SDSU will both move up a classification in FB sometime in the next 10 years. The Bison need a new facility first. Ours will be done in 2016.

The Summit isn't the Valley - that is true. How often has your team gone dancing the past two years? (And your lame interlude deal doesn't count - lol)

I will take the exposure we get by being the dominant team in a conference with an automatic bid every year. Our team is going to be pretty salty this year. Quit ducking us on the hardwood Panthers. We dispatched better teams than yours the last two years.

What is DJs 40 time? I can't remember Zenner ever getting caught from behind - 99 yds at Kansas, outran Nebraska's DBs, he is fast. Seriously because he is a white kid people think he is not as fast as he is.
