    Re: 9 Thoughts: Hawaii

I'm really frustrated, not with the loss itself, but with HOW we lost this game. That being said, even though it does hamper our playoff hopes, it's important to keep in mind the educational value this trip had. Yes, its awesome to get to go visit Hawaii, but hearing the players, Farley, and Rima talk about the other stuff....seeing the U.S.S. Arizona and Pearl Harbor, the cultural opportunities...I do think this was a great trip for a bunch of college kids to make. I'm a die hard fan and I want wins, but in the end its good to keep in mind these are college kids getting an education first and foremost.

Meanwhile, we are playing Iowa, Wisconsin, and flying across the world to play Hawaii.
It disappoints me that Minnesota has only been on the schedule once, back in the '80s. Given the number of UNI grads up here, that CF is only 3.5 hours away and until the new stadium, the Gophers had lots of empty seats for games in the dome.
      "Well, that escalated quickly."

Agreed. Would love to see more games against the Gophers.

I agree, a game with Minnesota makes a ton of sense.

As for seating, moving to a new stadium has done nothing to increase attendance at Gopher games. There are thousands of empty seats every Saturday, unless Iowa, Wisconsin or Nebraska come to town. It's pretty pathetic, actually, because its a fabulous place to watch a game.

Two way streets suck. Why can't we just get exactly when we want, when we want it? C'mon Troy!!

I'm sorry for the snarkiness (I'm totally not...okay maybe a little)

For my argument I'm just going to throw out the top 50% of those so there are 28 schools in the bottom half of the non-power 5 schools that play football. Schedule THOSE teams, because some of them have to be looking to play games at home, and must be willing to pay for it. If they aren't, then my argument doesn't work.

I'm not saying that I'm 100% correct, but there has to be a balance between collecting a paycheck, playing a not-so-good team, and winning that game.
I know the payday is a big thing and the big paydays come from the schools that have large donor dollars. Most of these schools that you are referring to probably will not offer up the payday we've come to expect. Hawaii's pay seems less but you also have to factor in the travel that they paid for in addition to the dollars they paid to us. Minnesota and Kansas would be better games for us to win and with less travel issues but their pay might not be as much. Then what if we lose to them or an even lesser respected opponent. Then not only have we gotten less money but we also haven't test ourselves against a better quality opponent but now we have a BAD lose that could hurt our chances with the selection committee(not that it matters seeing our at large selection track record). I say let's keep knocking on the average to above average F5 schools doors, take their money and see what we are capable of. We have come a long way from the days of losing 50-0 to Iowa. A close loss hurts nothing, a win would do a lot and as long as we avoid the injuries we come out ahead either way. Conference games are what really matter and I would like to see us do everything we can to be ready for that instead of playing Drake and schools like INC.

The thing is, a loss to an FBS team, no matter how bad they are, should never be considered a bad loss for an FCS team. Especially since we have fewer scholarships and less resources. I think we should jump at the chance to play a Kansas or Minnesota type team. They are close, mediocre, would be somewhat of a decent payout, and give us a pretty good chance to take down an FBS team. All positives IMHO.
