Same here. Despite some headaches at the beginning, I was able to watch all but the first couple minutes of the game (albeit the video quality was certainly lacking at times), so I wasn't going to make a big stink about it. But I'm glad they went through with refunds.

Is the 60,629 the paid or those in attendance? Every school has policies in place to hand out quite a few complimentary passes. Plus season tickets are less per game and games are weighted individually. As per the post questioning the lack of UNI fans, I don't care who sits in the seat as long as they paid for the seat ($65 per).

        I'm hoping 60,000 x $65 x .20 = $780,000 That ain't gonna happen.

Me again. When Troy Dannen became AD the current contracts were being negotiated. With ISU at that time our guarantee(?) was the allotted tickets they gave us, say 6,000 at $60 per ticket = $360,000. If we sold less and ISU was unable to sell the unsold tickets, we got less. When those games became some of the top 5 attended games in ISU history the contract changed to 20% of the tickets sold or a set amount guaranteed. Contracts with Wisconsin and Iowa did not stipulate that UNI had to sell a certain amount of tickets to receive a guarantee.

I’m late coming back, but I’m here to eat my crow. Admittedly, I was overly optimistic about the Cyclones (which is, after all, pretty much what it takes to be a Cyclone football fan).

It has been a really busy week and I haven’t even been able to watch a replay yet, but I took advantage of a plane ride last night to write down a few of my thoughts.

Here is what really impressed me about UNI:
            • Bailey’s offensive presence was tremendous. He juked around defensive linemen and linebackers all night. And not like he was running for his life, but more like he was playing with them.
            • Applegate seemed to take over the game at times. He played like Iowa State thought Tucker would.
            • Farley absolutely baited Lanning for the game-sealing interception.
            • Brown was the only player looking for the ball on his interception. Lanning took the blame for that one, but I think Ryen ran the wrong route and Lazard didn’t come back for it.
            • UNI just devoured Lanning on the safety.
            • I haven’t watched the replay, but it seems that UNI keyed on Warren every time on the zone read. Iowa State’s 51 yards rushing was exaggerated by a few decent runs late in the game. Iowa State fans are complaining about the coaches not emphasizing Warren running the ball, but it wasn’t a matter of not trying. UNI took it away (and gave the model for every Big 12 team to do the same).

Now, for a few concerns about UNI:
            • I wonder about the downfield passing game. Perhaps it was just honoring the strength of Iowa State’s DBs. Fountain’s speed at WR was a non-issue.
            • Punting needs to improve. It took a classic Iowa State ending to not make that bad punt disastrous for UNI.
            • Similarly, kickoffs and field goals need to improve. Both teams kicked it out of bounds in the 4th quarter.
            • Bailey showed lack of judgment on the unnecessary pass to Malloy. Why make that throw when he could keep running and make more yardage.
            • I don’t remember who it was, but a defensive lineman made a clothesline tackle that was close to an unnecessary roughness penalty for going for a player’s head.
            • Going 4 for 17 on 3rd down is going to be costly in close games.

The bottom line is that UNI won the turnover battle 1 to 4 and that almost always translates to victory in the game. Both teams tried to give the game away at the end, but Iowa State tried harder. Oh the woes of being a Cyclone fan. Now, I hope UNI tightens up its performance on 3rd down, especially in the 4th quarter. The defense played hard and smart, especially for a season opener, so things look good for the Panthers. I already have my tickets for the October 29th showdown with the Bison.

And now, as a postscript (because I think a few UNI fans might care and I need a place to post my thoughts anyway), I thought I would give a few comments about Iowa State.

Things that impressed me about Iowa State:
              • Tight ends Chandler and Harms played well. Both seemed to have lots of energy and were used to block on the line and downfield. Prior to the game, I hadn’t even heard of Harms. Now, if they will get some balls thrown to them.
              • Receivers Daley and Butler emerged as the legitimate downfield threats that was predicted. Butler’s height and long arms make him a great goal line target, especially with Lazard drawing the best defenders.
              • Northrup and Harvey made a ton of tackles, partly because the d-line wasn’t making any, but also as they were catching up to runners who had already made somebody miss.
              • Cotton-Moya played a solid game at safety, even though he really wasn’t tested downfield.
              • Lanning’s TD throws were all very nice. He led receivers well and threw twice over their shoulders in the endzone.
              • Mitchell Meyers is the feel good story of the year for Iowa State. It was nice to see him making plays that showed he legitimately belonged in the game.

Things that concern me about Iowa State:
              • Key players were missing without explanation. Payne was listed to start at CB, but didn’t play. People were raving about Fernandez at TE, but he isn’t even listed on the depth chart. Good-Jones was suspended, apparently for something earlier in the season, but it meant that several players were playing out of position according to the depth chart (which apparently means about as much as Farley’s first week depth chart).
              • Others played, but didn’t make plays, such as Demond Tucker and Jhaustin Thomas. Perhaps this is really more of a tribute to the UNI line that kept them occupied and Bailey who moved around them with ease.
              • Of course, Lanning’s bad decisions on the safety, fumbled snap, and interceptions were the single plays that gave away any chance of winning the game.
              • People have criticized Campbell for calling the timeout before the field goal, but I would have done the same thing. If you have a timeout left at the end of the half, you use it to ice the kicker, especially when he has already missed. What bothers me is that they weren’t ready for the kick and then after a timeout weren’t ready for the play.
              • I think there were 9 penalties on Iowa State. And these weren’t penalties for incidental things that happen during a play, but for lining up wrong and having 12 players on the field on a kickoff.
              • The collision between Warren and Ryen after Warren took the ball and Ryen clobbered him while in motion. That may have been the most Iowa State-ish play ever (or at least since playing at K-State last year).
              • It was cool to see the Allstate net, but I don’t think it caught a single kick all night. I couldn’t tell if it was tangled, too small, or just placed wrong. How do you mess that up?
              • Iowa State was finally moving the ball on the ground in the 4th quarter (with two good runs to double the total yards for the game) when Lanning threw the mystery ball down the right side for an interception. On one hand, I like the aggressive attitude. On the other hand, I think I would have kept running until UNI stopped it, particularly in order to keep the clock running.

And lastly, a few comments on non-game related issues:
              • I read lots of posts about Cyclones.tv not working well for you. Well, it didn’t work well for Iowa State fans either. And it isn’t the first time. The entire first half of the Texas game two years ago was messed up because of a switching problem in Atlanta. Streaming is the future (actually it is the present) and I’m not sure why Iowa State can’t get this figured out.
              • Hundreds of Iowa State ticket holders got stuck outside the stadium because the new, fancy, embossed season tickets had perforations above and below the bar code (even though it has been years since they did anything other than scan them). When I showed my season tickets to a co-worker a few weeks ago, he noticed the problem right away and predicted that there would be trouble. These fans had ripped their tickets above the bar code and were having to wait for someone in the ticket office to let them in. Finally, they just looked at the tickets and let the fans rush in at the last minute. Season ticket holders got an email last week that gave them instructions (with photos and arrows) on how to tear off their tickets. Stupid. Just stupid.
              • How disappointing was Thunderstruck as the entrance song? Yes, it is better than Smoke on the Water, but who told them that Thunderstruck was a good idea. We were all pumped up for Campbell to do something cool, like a WWE entrance or a rap song, not something that is derivative of what they do at Kinnick or in Fargo. Don’t get me wrong, Thunderstruck is a great entrance song . . . for when I was in college a few decades ago.

Now we get to see what adjustments the coaches make . . . starting with Thunderstruck.

The bottom line of last week was that my second favorite team won! And we had our best tailgate ever. We expected 100, planned for 150, and ran out of food. It was nice to see several UNI folks there. The rest of you (except a few) are welcome next year.

Today, it is on to Iowa City to tailgate with UNIdaughter and hope for the best. The last time we went to a game at Kinnick, two of the guys in our group (not me) got open container citations and Iowa State won 9-7 on a classic Jake Knott interception late in the game, so it was worthwhile.

Iowa State engineering skills at its finest...

Still waiting for a team to come into their stadium with MmmBop blaring through the speakers! Now that's unique!
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

One thing I thought was super annoying was the lack of recognizable songs being played the entire game. It was just generic guitar solo SUPER LOUD all the time.

To be fair though I'm not nearly as up on music as I should be, but still. Thunderstruck might have been the only song I recognized.

UNIDad, in response to your long post above - ISU's biggest thing is Demond Tucker has to stay healthy. He got hurt last week near the end of the first half, and ISU's effectiveness against the run changed drastically with him out. It's obvious he's the "glue" that holds that whole thing together. I watched pretty closely in the second half, and he only played about 1 out of every 5 snaps that he should've been in. It was clear something wasn't right, and also clear that UNI could handle the remaining guys in one on one match ups. And you are right, Northrup showed up as playing a nice game in the replay.

ISU has receivers to compete against anyone. Don't be shocked to see that Park kid come in at QB if Lanning struggles at all. Campbell has to know that throwing the ball to his biggest strength is his best way to win.

                        • UNI punting is fine. They tried to get fancy in the last one but on the other 7 punts it was a 49 yard average.

No GAF about any of Iowa States crap the rest of the season.
