If anyone was watching Samford take Florida State to the wire last Sat night...there was a blatant pass interference late on the Noles that had a huge impact on outcome.

One no call like that can turn a close game. 5 of them makes the game unwinnable.
Winning is more fun than losing.

I know of other FCS coaches that have been told them same. I 100% believe it. It’s not that they call extra penalties on smaller schools. It’s an unwillingness to call anything that isn’t blatantly obvious on the bigger school.
sometimes I just wish they'd at least call the blatant ones on the big schools. would be a nice start.

I feel like we don't have a chance, so maybe we will actually win.

However, they frequently forget or over look the fact there was a minor difference when Fran was ejected. The wheels fell off after the players watched the police escort.

Was able to find the exact TD run I was talking about

            https://youtu.be/vUGOi40IraY?t=8m25s

#68 gets away with a major hold on McNeil because he kept his hands mostly inside but you can see McNeil blow him back and nearly blow the play up. It was saved because two major handfuls of jersey were grabbed to turn McNeil and get him away from the cut. If you pause at 8:33 you can see the OL actually has a hold of the 7 on the back of McNeil's jersey

#62 grabs Farley and it looks clean at first from this angle but you can see him turn Farley and bear hug him out of bounds as the RB goes past him. The ESPN coverage of the game showed about 7 replays from the goal line angle on that side line. It was a blatant hold right in front of a ref looking right at it.

#4 grabs a MASSIVE handful of Hall's jersey and spins him right out of the RB path, again right in front of the ref.

Again, there are better angles of that play out there - I just don't care to look super hard right now for it. I used to know where the best place for them was.

            https://youtu.be/vUGOi40IraY?t=9m8s

Left guard gets destroy by O'Brien. As Mac beats him (pause at 9:13 and you can see it) the LG grabs the neck of his jersey and pulls it so hard that if you pause the video you can see the bottom of the chest plate of Mac's pads. Mac is 100% in line with Rudock and a step and a half away from him with him yet to start his throwing motion. It's a sack, at a minimum it's a broken up pass due to a hit. Insteaf the hold happens right in the wheel house for a hold call. Mac gets pulled down to the side of Jake who escaped for an 11 yard run on 3rd and 10. Rather than 4th and 16 from mid field it's Iowa first down inside the 35

            https://youtu.be/vUGOi40IraY

Same drive at the goal line. Once again, O'Brien beats the OL to the inside gap. He's got a clear path to take the RB down in the back field - pause it at 9:36 and it's clear as day - right where the C would be looking. Instead the hold slows him down just enough for the RB to score. You can also see the C (#63) go for the reach block across the man up NG to drive him out of the hole. To do so he just bear hugs him...doesn't even try to keep hands inside...to do so.

Those two plays in the same drive were a 17 play 79 yard drive - during which UNI had the lead. That drive created a pretty big turning point in the game - and was extended like it was 100% because of multiple missed holding calls.

Getty Images has a nice photo of Darrian Miller getting tackled by his face mask and ear hole by Reggie Spearman that wasn't called.

That's 14 points found in a 10 minute fan made video that featured less than 1 minute of game play shown.

I don't blame that loss on penalties - but man it would be interesting to see how that game plays out if it didn't take 15 accepted penalties against UNI before the first flag was thrown on Iowa at all.

              This exactly.

Seems like a lot of people must think the moon landing was faked.

This is what I meant by saying the officials weren't watching both sides of the ball. 90% of penalties called in a game are probably legitimate and 10% bad calls. So if UNI was flagged 25 times, probably 22 of them happened. It's often said that holding can be called on every play. Pass interference or holding can be called on every play if there is any contact whatsoever between defensive players and receivers. Other penalties as well I'm sure. So given there is an opportunity to call those things on every play and the officials only call them on one team and never the other, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out something stinks.

Here's to a fair game this week, may the best team win unless it's Iowa, then may there be a fluke upset.

Rewatching the Montana game, I don't want to see anyone not fair catch a kick or punt all game. My god, terrible awareness in nearly all situations.

Also, and I know I complain about this a lot, but the use of timeouts in the second half makes me want to throw up

Farley hasn't been able to use timeouts correctly for 17 years, I don't think he's magically going to start now...

Re watched the Montana Game. Iowa wins by 28 plus,,, unless we can see the Eli that we know and heard about prior to last game where can toss the ball with accuracy and read the field for multiple targets. With Iowa’s “soft” zone we are going to have to pass, and pass well, to have a shot. Not going to be able to run unless the passing game is on and then opens it up. Colton showed flashes but with Iowa’s D line and DE’s, he will struggle when he runs out of the pocket. Way too many misses at Montana, and not just missing on throws to open receivers , but missing seeing the receivers altogether. I keep thinking back to the Spring game, if Eli goes down or has a repeat Montana performance, would like to see an arm like Sullivan against Iowa, he was the only one that showed he can throw it to a spot and not a receiver. Looking at the Game again, It took the QB for Montana 1 out of 3 or 4 tries at that end-zone corner fade , Sullivan came in practically cold and dropped a 17 yarder in tight coverage like shooting fish in a barrel. I was also impressed with his composure delivering on another very tight pass to a TE for a 60 yarder, who I didn’t even think was open. That’s what it will take to stay close and Have a shot, dropping nice passes in the open spots, Just my thoughts both Colton and McElvains style will face a very very tough challenge with this D scheme. Eli did look uncomfortable and off at Montana, hopefully he can muster up some confidence and stand and deliver in the open spots like the coaches have said he was doing in Spring and Camp. If not, I say throw Sullivan in, at least for a game like this when we need that crisp passing. Save Colton or Will against a team where their scrambling style could be effective.

Iowa has been very consistent in play on both sides of the ball the first two weeks. The defense won't change for us, but I believe they'll work the passing game in preparation for Wisky.

Call me an optimist, but I have to believe the troubles at Montana with two weeks preparation should render a somewhat effective game plan.

Now just add in a few breaks...

But wouldn't you think a history of troubles at Montana with an entire off season of preparation would render a somewhat effective game plan?
