  • The Rule of 4 - 2019 Edition

This will be the tracking for the 4 game redshirt rule for the 2019 season. People always seem to apply it to only freshman - myself included - but UNI actually has 49 players with a "true" redshirt available with 29 true freshman and 20 between the sophomore and senior classes that would/could still potentially use a "true" redshirt.

There are a few impact seniors that could potentially redshirt this year if injured early in the season - Briley being one of them. Though I doubt Briley would use it given his NFL aspirations.

*EDIT TO THIS STATEMENT A COUPLE WEEKS LATER* Farley mentioned him using it potentially. So we will see

    * 10/7 EDIT - Jalen Rima announced he is going to RS and transfer after playing his 4 games

10/8 edit - Farley confirmed that Bohr (leg/knee) will miss the remainder of the season after the injury he suffered at Weber State. Bohr has one year of eligibility left and could still red-shirt

10/24 EDIT: STREAMLINED THE LIST - Mayberry, Lawrence and Brekke all lost their RS last week against USD. None of these is a surprise. We did get our first new entrant of the season from the true freshman class - Caleb Lomica.

    11/5 update
FR RB Zach McCabbe loses his RS in the win over ISUr

    11/14 update
SR OL/DL Hezekiah Applegate has now played in 4 games. Next play and he loses his RS

This will be fun to watch. Thank you for adding this.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

Interesting, but not really shocking that Logan Wolf didn't see the field with all of the talent we have at receiver. Anyone know if he is expected to get playing time this year?

Also, did Logan travel with the basketball team to Italy?

He'll see the field in football. Might only be the 4 he's allowed but he'll play.

No, he did not go to Italy. He's on a football scholarship.

From the WCF Courier, the day after the win over SUU:

“'He is out for a while. I really don’t know how bad it is,' Farley said. 'He is still getting second opinions and stuff like that. It is significant enough you won’t see him for awhile.'

Farley added it would be great if Moore could return sometime this season, but added Moore never took a redshirt and that remains an option if the injury proves to be season-ending."

            "Well, that escalated quickly."

Anybody know the status of Hezekiah Applegate and Shakespeare Williams?

Two good players who I don't think have seen the field yet thru 2 games.

Also...I heard Austin Evans will be back for Idaho State. Another good ball player we haven't seen yet.

Every indication for both of them says they just flat got beat out and haven't earned snaps. Applegate put on 35 pounds (now listed at 302) to move inside full time and then Butcher showed up and Brawntae Wells took a HUGE step forward in terms of play and production. Jegen staying on defense and the emergence of Omar Brown and Jevon Brekke plus the transfers in took Williams' snaps.

We know injuries happen over a long season, hopefully they're both staying ready for when their number is called.

I just can't quite get there. Two high quality players. We'll see what happens the next couple weeks.

Regarding Moore, Farley did not commit to anything but said yesterday, "There won’t be nothing new on Briley probably until three quarters of the way through the season. It’ll be getting into October before we even have to start seeing where he’s at with things right now."

Moore has been to multiple doctors for consultation. No surgery at this time, but Farley said that he (Farley) can't explain the injury but that is it not a muscle tear.

                        "Well, that escalated quickly."

if there won't be nothing new, does that mean that there will be something new?

First posted updated through Idaho State

The following players are at 3 of four games played
                            Omar Brown Fr.
                            Matthew Cook Fr.
                            Deion McShane So.
                            Eric Mooney So.
                            Jared Brinkman Jr.
                            Weston Schultz Jr.
                            Matthew Vanderslice Jr.
                            Christian Jegen Sr.
                            Jackson Scott-Brown Sr.
                            Tristan Bohr Sr.
                            Jalen Rima Sr.
I don't think any of those are a shock outside of maybe Cook

I think we are seeing the separation of guys who will play and guys who are looking at still redshirting but getting 4 games played

There is still plenty of time, and we haven't really had a game conducive to getting a ton of young guys out there to getting PT worth getting them out there for, but I think we are seeing the 4 game rule not really changing anything for Mark. I don't think he's going to be a guy to "abuse" the system with it.
