  • Brinkman named MVFC Defensive Player of the Year

    Yeah, he won it again.

    Source:
Missouri State QB Jason Shelley has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the league's Newcomer of the Year; UNI's Jared Brinkman has been tabbed the league's Defensive Player of the Year; Youngstown State's QB Demeatric Crenshaw is the conference Freshman of the Year; and coach Matt Entz has been tabbed the MVFC Coach of the Year.   The league's specialty award winners highlight the 2021 MVFC all-league first-, second- and honorable-mention team units, announced Monday, Nov. 29.
    "Well, that escalated quickly."

He joins LBs William Freeney, Andre Allen and DL James Ruffin as UNI two-time winners of the award.

Other UNI players to receive it were LB Mark Farley, LB Adam Vogt, LB Brandon Carter, LB L.J. Fort, DB Deiondre Hall and DE Carter Schult since 1985.

Mark has had 9. That's insane. Basically he's had the DPOY half of the years he's coached. What a program we've got on that side of the ball.

It's really too bad that Joe Davis shredded that defense in Grundy Center and set us back Can you imagine an uptempo wide open offense paired with the defenses we've had.....

uptempo offense can be a double-edged sword. If the offense is effective at sustaining drives, it can wear down the opposing defense. But if they go 3-and-out (or only pick up one first down), it just means that your own defense gets less time to rest/recover and they get worn out even faster.

Totally agree but that's not different that what we've had the last few years anyway...

the inept offenses we've had have used the entire playclock (sometimes more, forcing timeouts to be called or delay of game penalties), or have committed other penalties. All of which gives our defense a bit more time to rest.

That’s just too depressing to think about.

I am curious to hear more about this legendary event in Grundy Center that apparently had far-reaching and negative impacts upon our football program. Can someone provide some context?

                      Long story short....

Had a scrimmage in mid-August in Grundy Center because he wanted to play outside on grass before playing Iowa State and our outdoor was the old garbage pit.

Joe Davis had been hired as OC and put in an uptempo, fast break, throw it all over offense that was snapping the ball every seven seconds with Eli Dunne running it over Bailey.

That night he was absolutely shredding the defense. Up and down the field, touchdown after touchdown, just electric.

Problem being that plays were going in and being run before Mark could think about them and because they're calling two or three at a time, Mark couldn't step in and overrule them. It was just too fast for him and he'd lost control.

Called Joe Davis in the following Monday, told him that he was going to decide who played quarterback (Bailey) and that they were going to slow it down and run the ball.

Not that it's a surprise any longer, but talk about being a control freak to the extreme...

He really would be a better AD than football coach at this point.

Do you think he would try to rule from the grave? Trying to run things twice removed like Jerry Jones?
