  • The Official Bob Bowlsby Interim AD Thread

I was sick of seeing that son of a *****'s name on the thread title.

    Here. We. Freaking. Go.

Yep - and hopefully we can retire that other thread as well.

Good tidings of great joy, unto all Panthers.

What changes do you see Bowlsby implementing as the interim guy?

I don't expect any wholesale changes. I do expect that he'll be pretty aggressive with corporate sponsors and donors while he's here.

He's not here to make policy or long lasting changes. He's here to give the next guy a giant, positive push.

I'm optimistic that this equates to Farley being top of the list of for permanent AD job.

I'm not sure it's "changes," so much as:

            1. He gives the school time to conduct a sober, serious, search with depth and breadth;
            2. He can jumpstart and create momentum for fundraising; and
            3. A competent hand in the office has a steadying effect unto itself. He can reinstate a sense of seriousness in the overall athletics operation such that the permanent hire either has a department back at even par to start from, or has a list of observed issues that can be quickly cleaned up.

He's not going to be Beth Goetz, making permanent decisions with an eye towards being in the chair for a long time; Bowlsby isn't going to tie the permanent ADs hands, but he can do a lot of course-correcting.

Sponsorship and donations will clearly be job one, but an outside perspective on how the department is structured should be welcomed. Maybe it's good, maybe some staff or resources need to shift slightly.

Remember when he was here, UNI aggressively used the Dome for concerts, events and other money making efforts. As long as our teams have places to practice - I think a return to that model would be healthy. McLeod is a great size for some musical acts. It could bring in much needed revenue, and anytime you get then general public on campus, it helps with recruiting students.

So what you're saying is, Bowlsby will finally dust off that dusty envelope DH left behind with the Dome naming rights inside!

Those markets have changed so much - the middle tier of musical acts has largely hollowed out (country aside, which is probably what they'd do in any case) - and it's hard to make money.

BUT it's great for visibility and culture. It turns the athletic facilities into community resources to be enjoyed and connected to all the time. That has been lost in the last several years, and it's worse than dollars and cents.

Think about it this way: If I'm a local business considering naming rights, 6 football games, some track meets, and basketball, isn't much in terms of local benefit. The athletic department does minimal advertising for athletics, and we don't draw like we used to. But promise some concerts, events, and other things, each of which will be heavily promoted locally? There is great value in feeling like you have your name on every big event happening in town.

The McLeod Center should absolutely be competing with the building in Cedar Rapids for shows. Generally the same size, newer, more comfortable and much easier to get in and out of.

They'd be playing catchup with Powerhouse though. That place has built a lot of good relationships with the people they've been able to get to come there.

I just looked at their upcoming lineup, and it's bad. Like, real bad.

But there are things UNI can and should be doing. It's second-tier, in terms of priorities, but it should be occurring.

Just yesterday - November 29th - was the anniversary of the Police concert/ice storm in 1983. The day started out warm and sunny ...
                          "Well, that escalated quickly."

I mean, just this year they've had Old Dominion, Jim Gaffigan, Bert Kreischer, also forgot they had Gabriel Iglesias end of last year or early this year, and Jo Koy next week which are all national names.

Maybe they're doing fine, but what they have coming up is extremely underwhelming, and mostly being done in their "Club" setup.

But these are not important details. What matters is turning UNI back into the cultural center of the community, an area we've foolishly vacated. And Bob isn't going to do that. His job should be to raise as much money as he can, and set the table for a permanent successor who can lead UNI into the next decade.

What today means, to me, is more evidence of a University that finally woke up and chose life.
