    New AD and a Funeral.

I did not get into my full thoughts on communications from the athletic department. I am much more disappointed/frustrated/confused by what they do than I let on in the column.

Edit: I also put it here because Bowlsby is still the interim AD, and spoke last week at the West Gym.
I have had some correspondence with university officials. My column has been updated.

Here's the article that is on Inside UNI.

Ben Allen was a BOR stooge and Bill Ruud was in way over his head at a university this size.

Those two are responsible for that 10 year period where it could've been saved.

    Judgment is needed.

This was a choice - or sheer incompetence - by several administrators in Gilchrist and the athletic department over many years.

I'm excited about the new AD but the fundraising question needs to be put to her at the presser. Does she have a plan? Why shouldn't UNI be able to fundraise like our sister universities?

P.S. Does the building truly deserve to be condemned? Seems like it went from being used to "not safe" very fast.
The building has been "not safe" for ****ing years. We just happened to have someone in charge that ignored it completely (well, it wasn't just him but the end of it happened under him) and rather than spending anything to save it they allowed it to fall under the condition of condemned. It needed to be saved or moved out of about 10 years ago, truly.

Exterior bracing is the only thing holding the east wall up. Was probably used way longer than it should have been.

"The UNI Athletic Department and the University of Northern Iowa failed its wrestling program when it let the West Gym crumble to pieces. They have failed the campus as a whole and everyone who stepped foot, at one time or another, in the West Gym. It is a historic building, it should have been treated better. Invites should have gone out. Photographs should be taken of the inside to document the building. People should get to say goodbye."

Thanks, Nic. This is required reading for UNI alum and students. University administrators failed in spectacular fashion with the West Gym fiasco.
