    All valid points.
Mark would need to bring a successor on staff, unless he believes that person is already here.
As I've stated before, Mark hasn't had a great track record retaining coaching talent. That issue can be financially related, but I don't think that's the only reason.

The program is in this situation partially because there has never been another coach tabbed as "the next guy".

The rest of the football program isn't gonna put their lives on hold for a year for Mark's benefit.

Organizations are living, breathing things and need continuous oxygen.

A more practical solution would be to have Mark become Special Assistant to the Athletic Director responsible for UNI-Dome fundraising or something of the like and move on to the next coaching staff as promptly as possible following the end of the season.

That would take some financial gymnastics...so let's see if the new athletics staff can deliver.

If the financials can get ironed out I see that as a better solution.
I was coming at it from the aspect of UNI is not going to be able to afford his buyout.

I'd take a shot at it like this...

Mark, we love you. You're a huge asset to UNI. But we feel it's time to let the football program write the next chapter.

We've got you under contract for another year at $400k. Here's the deal...

For the next 2 years, you take a new contract at $275k and become Sr AD of UNI-Dome Renovation Fundraising (exact title TBD).

          We'll pay you $550k over 2 years vs $400k for 1 year.

You can work 40 hours a week vs. 80. You don't have to travel to recruit. You can have a normal life with your expanding family.

You still get the courtesy car and the retirement contributions, etc.

And we're gonna name something in the Dome after you.

Now as AD... I gotta go find another $175k in the budget for the next 2 years so I can pay my new Head Coach $300k.

And I've got Mark leveraging his relationships with the university and football program to get our funding where it needs to be.

Winning is more fun than losing.

You are correct. Like others I was hoping for 2025 to be it, but nope, Two more years left. Given that timeline, Franklin should approach him with the job reassignment proposal, have 2025 be his farewell tour and use this offseason to help start looking for a new coach and staff for 2026.

I don’t know why schools offer long term extensions to lifer coaches. Even in 2021 Farley wasn’t going to go anywhere else. Keep offering 2 or 3 year extensions so you can see how things are going at the end of the contract. Things going good, here’s another 2 years. Not so good, thank you for your service. And then you can start the rebuild before you may lose the fan base.

One year buyout is totally different than two.

Mark enjoys collecting his $400,000/year welfare check. You’re going to have to drag him out of there kicking and screaming like every other boomer holding onto to power too long. A 2025 farewell tour is pure message board fantasy.

I agree. That’s why one of my concerns is with 2025 being an easier schedule, even finishing at .500 could get him another extension. Making the playoffs will guarantee it. I hope that Franklin realizes that no matter how the 2025 and 2026 seasons ends, this is the last ride for Farley, no matter how much the big name donors love him.

Does UNI have “big name donors” though? We’re talking about being unable to pay a $400k buyout. There are many individual college players who make multiples of this per season in NIL money.
