  • W-SR's Austin Phyfe signs NLI

Steve Gearhart had this on his FB page:

"Men's Basketball Signs Austin Phyfe to NLI

University of Northern Iowa head men's basketball coach Ben Jacobson announced the signing of Austin Phyfe (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) to a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Panthers beginning in 2017-18."

Austin is a definite redshirt with what we have at the post next year, but then should see good minutes the next year. Good skills and feet for a big guy, but still needs some work in the weight room.

Any guess on who will take the other scholarship we have to 2017?

The good feet part isn't a surprise, since his dad was a good athlete. He's a bigger framed guy though, right? I've never seen him in person. His dad was pretty athletic but kind of skinny, but that was also before weight training became so widespread in basketball.

Don't be surprised if they bank the scholarship. I believe just 1 offer out there yet (Sasha Stefanovic), but if he doesn't take it, maybe hold on for a grad transfer.

To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

The way Sasha appears to be trending, I wouldn't be surprised if he waits to sign until Spring. I'm not seeing him actively listing teams he's interested in right now. I could be wrong though. I don't think UNI signs anymore this Fall.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

Austin is not just a big body. He is quite athletic . . . inside and outside of the paint.

And he has a UNI bloodline.

The angle is deceiving but from the clip he looks almost like a shooting guard.
He better lean quickly that the correct term is UNI not NLI!

Austin Phyfe has secured his first career MVC Player of the Week honor.

And he has quietly been building a spectacular season. I only say “quietly” because until I looked at some of his stats, I hadn’t realized how good he has been. Perhaps he has been overshadowed by AJ on his team and players like Krutwig in the conference.
He is currently #66 in the nation on Bart Torvik’s PORPAGATU. AJ is #63 and Krut is #104.
And he is #14 in the nation in Field Goal Efficiency. AJ is #839 and Krut is #315.
His Offensive Rating is #20 in the nation. Krut is #482.
He is #20 in the nation in Offensive Rebound Percentage. Krut is #485.
He is #214 in the nation in Defensive Rebound Percentage. Krut is #36.

Sounds like an MVC First Teamer to me.
