How are the MVC/MWC Challenge opponents usually determined? RPI or standings or something?
To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

Standings and Home-Away convenience. Like, if who we would match-up with is also scheduled with an away game, we wouldn't play them. I think.

I saw we will be playing Grand Canyon University at home, it is a auction item at Rally in the Valley and I think we will play Utah State for the Mountain West Challenge. Anyone else hear of any other games?

Grand Canyon would be a good buy game.

Utah State makes the most sense since they aren't changing any of the home/road split.

GCU has averaged over 20 wins over the last 5 years (since moving up to DI). They will compete for their conference title (in a really weak WAC). The school has a lot of money, and puts a lot into athletics. These are the types of games that will probably look better than it really is.

GCU is mostly a farce, IMO. But a W is a W and a schedule filler is a schedule filler.

It’s a program capable of 20 wins a year for a few years. Weak schedule or not, that’s way better than playing a DII or DIII school. It means they have some talent, which also means they’re capable of knocking off a name school with some lucky breaks, good shooting, etc. If that were to happen, it only helps us assuming we win.

                    Agreed.

Im pretty jaded on them so I’ll save my comments. To me they are equal to Liberty and UoP in terms of diploma mill and religious nut conventions.

To be fair they are trying to move away from the for profit school model. Mostly so they dont have to pay millions of dollars in property taxes each year.

That makes them more liberty and less UoP but not much different. Religious nut wing diploma mill of an institution.

A win is a win at the end of the season. I just want literally nothing to do with that...I don’t even like calling them a university....and I hope that the people who want them in the MVC are never given their wish.

I think you guys are not giving GCU enough credit. That is going to be a tough game. They have a legit coach, legit players, big time recruits coming in and A TON of money. That is a legit tournament contender. A win over GCU would be a feather in this young teams hat. UNI should be the favorite. But it's gonna be a battle.

I get that Grand Canyon is the current flavor of the month and obviously we won't take them lightly but results matter. They just finished 3rd in the awful WAC with a senior dominated team and lost their top assistant that did all the game planning to South Dakota.
