  • Nick Nurse

Nice to see former UNI basketball stud ('89) and now NBA Toronto Raptors Coach Nick Nurse get love all over the sports media this morning. Funny as hell. Go get 'em coach.

Just spent 25 minutes listening to Rima’s OPR interview with Nurse. Really disappointed that the only UNI related question was the last one and was about the picture of Tony Bennet guarding him. All typical questions that a low level national reporter would ask, at best. How do you prepare not knowing if KD is playing, nice to have home court advantage isn’t it, etc. The fact he didn’t ask about the influence Eldon may have had on him is actually hard to believe. Most interesting part was when he was asked about how he felt when Kwahi’s shot against the Sixers went in and Nurse talked about being an asst in ‘90 when Newbys shot went in.

Nick was very gracious toward UNI and went out of his way several times to talk about his family's long relationship with the school.

Gary could have went a little farther into his UNI days.

But Nick didn't say away from his UNI roots at all. He's a Panther.

That guy is a basketball junkie. He'd coach an intramural game or a pick up game in the park if you let him.

A guy that really appreciates every chapter of his journey and how it got him there.

I've wondered a few times if Nick invites Ben and staff out to visit practice and meetings. It would be wonderful if we could leverage Nicks experience into some unique offensive schemes.

The other her thought is that Nicks brother Steve is still at UNI. Think he gets some sweet tix?

Don't want to start a whole thing but Rima getting a second hour is the worst thing that ever happened to that show. Couple it with losing Cole and that thing has gone downhill quickly.

Seriously, Nurse is being interviewed by everyone and they are asking the same questions. Its not like listeners don't have access to all the national interviews.

Lately it has been fun to listen to Rima pretend to be sad while Leo moans about the Squakeye men's basketball roster problems. But not being a baseball fan, summer gets pretty boring for OPR.

I listen to PTI podcast most mornings while running. They had him on for 5 good minutes last night. They actually asked him about getting an accounting degree and he mentioned going to the University of Northern Iowa which has a "great accounting program, one of the tops of the country". He did finish by saying he's never accounted for anything. Also said the NN hat he got was through the Nike rep working with Steve since Northern Iowa is a Nike school.

Also cool that when they ended the interview he said "thanks guys, big thrill for me". He's handling it great, but this is all a much bigger stage than he's ever been on. They said later he'd watch PTI late at night when he was in Europe. Hopefully he had big dreams, but it's still got to be pretty cool that now he's being interviewed by Tony and Michael.

found this from a UK paper site
"Nick Nurse on his journey from Britain’s ‘basketball backwater’ to $10m contract at Toronto Raptors"
Nick Nurse still vividly remembers his introduction into the weird and wonderful world of professional basketball coaching somewhere in London Docklands nearly three decades ago.

“The announcer came out to mid-court to introduce the teams and his microphone wouldn’t work. So he just dropped it and started shouting out the players’ names at the top of his voice.

“I remember turning to one of the guys next to me on the bench and saying ‘Welcome to the big time!’”

Nick’s getting a lot of good publicity around being a sort of basketball “mad scientist”, coming up with funky offensive schemes (and use of players) that are countering how Golden State wants to play D. Many are attributing this to the time he spent in Europe being exposed to different offensive styles than we tend to see in the US.

He’s one win away from a ring. Hope he closes it out soon, since Golden State has the talent to come back even without Kevin Durant.
