However, the frustrations with the offense especially aren't really new to this year. I just think it's been exacerbated by the fact they don't have a guy like A.J. to bail them out when there's a poor possession. I think it was telling that Coe's offense looked more fluid last night. That should not happen. They were getting better shots many times, and that's just not something you should expect when it's a D1 vs. D3. No matter how bad a year that D1 team is having. I still think the potential for this team is big, but I absolutely understand why people are frustrated with seeing some of the same things over and over when it's clearly not working.
I would suggest not getting too worked up about the offense. We are only in year 3 with this system and most of the guys we are playing this year are 1st year guys.

Just last season, we quite literally had one of the best most efficient offenses in the entire country running this exact offense.

Now that you say this, it actually does feel a lot like this first season we implemented the offense. One thing that is puzzling is Phyfe turnovers. I know he's a primary ball handler, but still, he should know this offense and how to handle different defensive looks better than anybody.

Hmmmmm? Time to bring out the age old saying "be careful what you wish for . . . . ."

My other thought "volleyball is 0 and 3 to start the season and is this a fireable offense?" "Is Bobbi done at UNI?"

Come on people this is the weirdest year/seasons ever.

With past success that UNI has had (which we all know you can live on the past) we have not been able to build the consistent program from year to year. It is amazing to watch what Coach Devries EX- UNI Panther (best Coach in the MVC) is Doing at Drake. He took over a bottom of the conference that has almost zero for talent his first year. I think after he signed he only had 6 players that were going to return. He recruited hard each year since and after 2 1/2 years has a record of 58-24 while the Panthers are 45-34. What a change taking place here in Iowa in the MVC

14-0 and have played 3 teams in the top 2 Quadrants of the NET, we have played 8. Yeah, let's get Chicago State, Omaha, and North Dakota back on the schedule.
Number of times on Sports Illustrated cover:
Ben Jacobson coached teams = 2
UNI teams coached by everyone ban thinks is better = 0

Say what you will about the week schedule, but it's getting them props. They're right on the cusp of being ranked. They were part of SportsCenter's highlight package last night, and they will continue to get so until they lose. They're already getting set up to be a Cinderella story. I'm not saying we can't have any strong matchups, but some gimmie games wouldn't have killed us, especially this year. 14-0 looks better than 4-10, no matter what. Even if it actually isn't (though this year, it's pretty safe to say that it is).

I think I read that Drake's average age on their team is 23.

Not making excuses for letting them take us over so fast, but during a covid year age and experience has to be huge. Look at Duke and Kentucky struggling with young teams. Look at Iowa's success with experience.

I always was hoping when we recruited AJ that another high major recruit would possibly follow. Also was hoping to get one when we were ranked 10th in the country with Tuttle going to two straight ncaa tourneys.

Would we be better this year with the players we have if we ran the old defense first. Slow on offense style? (Not sure if we get Born as a recruit if we do play the slow down style?)

Yea, scheduling send to have been a circus for every team this season. I agree, if it was a normal season we should have scheduled some easier games, but I think he would have. Marshall, Green Bay, New Mexico State, were some of the others we had scheduled. Plus we almost always have a low D1 game, like Morgan St or Tennessee Martin. IDK how much control we really had of the schedule this year.

Hey, they did beat K-State! (who lost to Baylor by 48 points last night)

Drake is combination of several things...

1--He's got older guys in a year where that really, really matters. He also plays a style where you kind of just roll the ball out on offense, give Penn a ball screen and see what you get. If you look across the country the teams that are having the best years are the teams without much structure.

2--Darian does a really nice job with his lineup combos. He consistently puts guys around Penn that feel the movement of the defense well and get open shots. He isn't Jake or Porter or Wardle yet but (if he stays) he's got a chance to get himself into that conversation with sustained success.

3--They've played NOBODY. Missouri State is the best win(s) 310th schedule per KenPom. Their league schedule is also incredibly backloaded. They haven't seen Loyola or Bradley yet. We wouldn't be undefeated with the same schedule but I'm guessing we'd be 11-3 at worst even without AJ.

And that may be the best summation that can be made of ANY sport, team, or coach. Good point.

Put tonearm down on broken record NOW...coaches can only accomplish what they have in the tool bag.

Points 1 and 2 just point out something I heard from an ex player during a tourney broadcast, and I completely agree. A lot of college basketball teams are overcoached. Basketball is designed around athleticism, not necessarily the ability to remember and execute 400 set plays, like some kind of robot. Also, even in a normal year, Drake’s record wouldn’t be much different, since DD has been very good at molding his system around his recruits. Lack of Covid wouldn’t change that.
