What's crazy is Evansville checks like every off court box the Valley would be looking for if we were expanding. Really nice facilities, decent sized metro area, they actually still draw decent crowds considering where they're at and the budget falls right in line with everyone else. Their fan base and boosters seem to really like the AD they hired in the spring so maybe there's a turn coming. I'm a lot more optimistic about them than I am Valpo.

Every conference needs someone at the bottom. I'm glad they are in the Valley. Like you said they are funding their programs and once every couple of decades they will catch lighting in a bottle and have an ok season. Having no separation in the conference hurts more than it helps in mid-majors. We need 2-3 teams to differentiate to setup for a "chance" for multi bids. If we all play .500 ball in conference we will be a perpetual one bid league.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

Agreed. I WANT them to be better and stay in the league. Hopefully they will get there. The league got hood-winked by Valpo, though.

        • Today a door dash delivery guy stumbled on to the court during the Loyola game. It gave them all something to smile and laugh about during this difficult season, if only for a little while.

Redbirds let Bradley off the hook in Peoria. Absolutely manufactured an L down the stretch with impressive precision. Bradley tried to help them get a dub but the Birds waived them off.
Yeah, a D+ effort out of me on the day I created the name for this account. I didn't think I would use this account more than once.

          • The meltdown by Illinois State was impressive last night. Bold strategy to constantly foul to let a team better than you stay in the game.

            • And Illinois St had 22 or 23 turnovers. Just a brutal game they are going to be kicking themselves for losing.

There is no underlying reason why Evansville should be so consistently this bad. It defies logic. If you looked at their results the last 15 years you'd think they played in a 2000 seat 60 year old gym, had the smallest budget in the league, and were located in town of 5K with no stoplights.

Valpo has done an awful lot of winning in their history. I am hopeful that a new coach can restart that engine. But there are certainly reasons why they might not be able to get there. They need a new gym BADLY. And some more fans wouldn't hurt. But their history and tradition coming into the MVC was SUBSTANTIALLY better than Loyola's was. OK maybe that isn't entirely fair as Loyola has some solid history from the 80s and earlier, but their recent history was certainly better. They had been in the NCAAs or NIT five of the six years previous to their joining the league.

Look at the atmosphere for the 2015 Horizon Championship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UFAekol_LU

In 2016 they were runners up in the NIT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HkETlZ7EgM

Atmosphere and support and success can be had there. Feels like Lottich has had his chance.

Yea, and they've actually had good teams on paper some years too. Balentine and Mockevicius were a hell of a duo, in hindsight, I'm surprised those two couldn't lead them to a NCAA tournament. Both were studs as Freshmen, played 4 years together and that program still couldn't win. The only year they didn't lose their first Arch Madness game was when Wes hit the buzzer beater to send us dancing. They did play when we and Wichita were both really good, but still.

Right. They'd won the CIT the year before and had everybody back, you'd have thought that would launch them into an NIT team at worst and it didn't happen. Ran Marty out of town two years later and hired McCarty without doing any background at all and now here they are.

                      • Evansville also has some tradition with basketball, they were the team with sleeved uniforms in the NCAA tournament in the 90s.

Not the point of the convo but man what a shot that was. Anyway, continue on.
