I think not having Austin is going to hurt us more than some think. I also don’t want to undersell how many points and minutes we are losing from last year. Green, Carter, Berhow, Pickford and Phyfe. We basically lost the starting 5 if we are being honest. I know Bowen and Nate started too, but not all the time.

Having said all that, I think 5 is more than fair. We have a habit of starting slow typically anyway, so don’t be alarmed if there are more bumps and bruises early on.

I actually like the comp Jake gave for this team comparing to AJ’s freshman year. That team took awhile to get going but that team played solid defense and should’ve made the tourney. It took a brutal hook and hold call against Bradley to knock us out. That team was tough and nobody wanted to play them by the end of the season. I would gladly take that tough of a team this year.

Yes, he did, but a summer to work and knowing now he will have to play should at least mentally make him more focused. Having Austin in front of him made Betz assume he wasn't going to play. The Virginia trip will show if the team is ready. We have a lot of returnees, but it feels like we're starting over.

Just so we're clear, Nate started and played in all 31 games last year. So yes, he did start all the time. Further more, he started 20 out of 23 games as a true freshman.

My bad. Must’ve gotten mixed up with the year before. No matter, they are losing a ton of minutes and production and that was ultimately my point.

We lost a ton of production from last year. Honestly, IMO, the preseason ranking of 5 has more to do with our coach and respect for him than what the voters have seen on the court from our current players.

I am excited to see what Betz can do as well. It seemed he played a lot more his first year than last year and I didn't know why. I was wondering if it was a commitment in practice issue. He is a strong kid and if he has the drive to play physical he should be able to produce. After watching Bowen play in high school, I am super exited for him to be the number one. As someone earlier stated, let's hope he can stay healthy. I also agree, I can see Nate making the second team all conference.

I'm not expecting much this year. Somewhere between 5-8 and probably going to get our ass handed to us in the non-con, which is fine if it prepares us for MVC play. The loss of Phyfe is big. Don't trust Cole or Betz much at all. Wish we would've hit the portal. Oh well.

Nice class next season. Good to give Loyola a parting gift too. Yeah, may have to go this season three scholarships short. So, 5-8 looks right.

That's actually the beauty of how this schedule is set up.

We're at home all the time with a young team to turn around and play most of those good teams on the road next year when we'll be in a spot to really look at an at large and those games will be more valuable. Plus, if you do happen to go on a run this year, it's still good enough to get an at large if we're better than expected.

Reminds me of last year when our veteran team opened the season at home vs Nicholls, Vermont, and Richmond and got waxed in all 3 games.

I'd blocked that Nicholls game from all memory. Thanks for that...

Breaking down the roster is tough. I do believe Nate and Bowen are a solid start in the backcourt, and Tytan will do well at the 4. We really need guys to step up though. I think Ege, Trey and Duax all contribute a lot of minutes, then it has to be a mix of Henry and Betz at the 5. That's still only 8 guys though, and the only others on the roster are walk-ons and Courbat, who hasn't been practicing much due to injury. Maybe we get lucky and Austin can come back and play well. I will say, we do have a lot of talented underclassmen. Which is crazy, because it already feels like Nate and Bowen have been here forever. Even if there's not a lot of winning, this will be a huge year to build on.

Krogmann is more than capable of giving a few minutes per night and won't hurt us in defense or rebounding even if he is a limited offensively.

                                And here's the new guys:
                                Ege Peksari ____
                                Trey Campbell ____
                                Charlie Miller ____
                                Michael Duax ____
                                Chase Courbat ____
                                Hunter Jacobson ____

A lot of Usage on that top table as well. Carter actually led the way, and we know Green commanded attention. Phyfe as well commanded a lot when he was out there, even in limited time, but in season's past as well. We also need to replace guys like Pickford and Berhow who both played their roles very well even in low usage. Guys like Anderson are going to have to fill a bit of Pickford's role, but also are going to need to take a lot more shots than him as well. Tough ask for sure.

I won't make any predictions because I feel I still have that early season optimism and hope, and I'm hoping we can semi surprise and have a strongish start something even like an 8-5(but a 9-4 or 10-3 would be better)

Born will pick up a lot of the slack obviously, it will also be interesting to see what Heise is asked of. He was such an efficient player at his role, but he'll be asked to take on a lot more and won't have that luxury anymore of being able to take a back seat. I'm guessing Duax or Wolf will fill more of that low usage, valuable defender and shooter type role that Heise once played. I also think this team leans heavier on the bench for production with guys like Campbell, Peksari, and even Wolf probably having some big games this coming year.

I still think the wildcard is Henry. I feel as if he has a very unique skillset and if he can start to figure this thing out a bit, could give us a big advantage going forward. Frontcourt depth is by far the biggest concern with neither a healthy Phyfe nor Courbat to start the season so a well conditioned solid 5 could mitigate the issue a bit.
