This kid is 6’8” or 6’9”. Good grief that is some impressive ball handling.

Best comp I can think of for him is Kevin Durant. Super tall, long and lanky, with some handles and more of a jump shooting game.
I cannot imagine he ends up in Cedar Falls though, but we can dream!

I was thinking through this class and our scholarship situation. As of now, it appears we have 15 guys who could receive a scholarship for 2023-2024. The limit is 13. I know some have speculated that Phyfe is going to pay his own way or get a medical exemption to allow for a 14th scholarship, but that is unknown right now. Let’s assume that does happen. We would still be one over and someone would need to be leaving.

Pause on that and roll the scholarship situation forward to this class of 2024-2025. Phyfe and Betz would be gone, but that leaves 13 players still on the team, so no open spots.

Keep in mind that we have continued to offer scholarship(s) after Hutson committed, which should tell us that the individual leaving is probably not Betz deciding to move on with life, as that doesn’t help the scholarship situation for 2024-2025. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

On the other hand, the chances of a college basketball team looking like what you expect it will look like a year in advance are quite low, so maybe the offers are “just in case” we have an open spot. At the very least, building more relationships on the recruiting trail is always a good thing and you never know when those relationships may pay off.

Have we offered more kids for 2023? I know we offered 2024 and forward, I don't recall seeing any other than those though.

No additional offers for 2023 that I’m aware of. I could be wrong, but didn’t we have 1 open spot for 2024 before Hutson committed? And he will still be around in 2024, right? If that is all true, it seems like we’re out of scholarships for this class.

There's no such thing as out of scholarships in the portal/NIL world....

Unfortunately it does create the difficulty in having to "over recruit" to ensure you're able to replace what may be potentially lost.

Though transfers were not uncommon in the past, either, hopefully we can remain 85-90% of the roster intact YoY. Though playing time could be sporadic for some and I could see a couple players taking opportunities next year as well.

It does make it hard to recruit when at this current moment it does appear there are no scholarships that can be guaranteed to new recruits.

Gotta think that recruiting these guys with existing P6 offers have the long term transfer possibility in mind, ala Washpun, Jesperson and now Hutson. Not that we think there's zero possibility they sign with UNI out of HS but the chances are minimal.

When can we expect to hear some commitments from this class?

I feel like it really depends on the kid. Some kids like to commit before their senior year, so they do it right before basketball season, and others like to wait and see if they can really blow up on the recruiting trail. I feel like most of these kids have potential to really blow up, so I'd be surprised if any committed early.

We offered a 6'8" forward from NJ Matthew Hodge today. Strangest offer we have ever made, especially since he's already got multiple P5 offers including Penn State and Maryland

Shoot your shot, I guess. We only got one offer for that year, might as well make it a good one.
