UNI pitcher Kailyn Packard pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 Panther win over SIU in today's second game of a double header (UNI also won the first game 7-5 thanks to a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th by catcher Emmy Wells).

The wins put the Panthers into 2nd place in the MVC standings with one game remaining on the schedule (also against SIU, at home tomorrow at noon).
If UNI wins (or the game is rained out), they will get the #2 seed for the conference tournament, while a loss would put them at the #3 seed.

the MVC softball tournament is set up a bit differently, with the top 2 seeds getting byes through to the semifinals, the #3 and #4 seeds getting byes to the quarterfinals, and the #5 and #6 seeds getting first round byes.
Illinois State (17-5) has clinched the #1 seed after concluding their regular season today
If UNI (19-7, 1 game remaining) wins their game against SIU tomorrow, they will get the #2 seed, else they will get #3
Missouri State (16-6) will get the #2 if SIU beats UNI, else they will get the #3
SIU (16-9, 1 game remaining) has clinched the #4 seed.

The only other game remaining on the schedule is Drake at Bradley.
seeding if Bradley wins: #5 Bradley, #6 Indiana State, #7 Evansville, #8 Drake
seeding if Drake wins: #5 Drake, #6 Bradley, #7 Indiana State, #8 Evansville
seeding if the game is cancelled: #5 Bradley, #6 Indiana State, #7 Drake, #8 Evansville

Loyola (8-16) has clinched #9 and Valpo (1-23) has clinched #10

I don't know if they're gonna win the Valley tournament, but they're certainly peaking at the right time.

        Also, god dang Valpo.

interesting that despite having won the series v the Redbirds & Salukis, we still trail them in RPI. Guessing the MVC will remain at one bid for the NCAAs.

Sure looks like the top 4 seeds have about equal chances of winning the MVC tournament, although it's not unheard of for the host school with a mediocre record to get hot and win it. I still don't like the single elimination format for softball. I won't forget the season (2012) where we had Jamie Fisher pitching and won the regular season easily, but lost our first game at the tournament to the host Salukis 1-0 and that was it, despite 38 wins overall.

I hope Heyer is OK! That could have been *really* serious had she not been wearing a mask, and I suspect she might have a mild concussion as it is.

Also want to say that Packard has been a godsend this season. The other pitchers have been good, but Packard is our best since Jackie Spencer was healthy.

that's because RPI looks at a teams schedule as a whole, and those two series are only 6 out of the 47 games that UNI has played (counting today's game)

Yep, lost some games early in the non-conference that we probably would win now. And if we win the MVC tournament, doesn't matter what the RPI is.

Panthers score some late runs this afternoon to secure a 3-0 win over SIU, completing the series sweep and securing the #2 seed for the conference tourney this next week in Evansville.
Their next game will be the 2nd semifinal at 2 p.m. (CDT) on Fri. May 14, against whoever emerges from the bottom half of the bracket:
#7 Indiana State plays #10 Valpo, with the winner moving on to face #6 Bradley. Then the winner of that game will face #3 Missouri State in the quarterfinal, and that winner will be UNI's opponent on Friday.
