Hoping to make it on Friday for the UNI/ISU meet. Feeling the angst of not having the meet in West Gym. That would be so awesome.

It does not appear West Gymnasium is on the National Registry of Historical Places, and given it's age, significance, and relatively unaltered condition, it seems like a prime candidate for that designation. It might also tie the hands of the university, if they are trying to demo or significantly change the building into something else.

The latest. Just by reading between the lines I think that my dream is coming true of moving rasslin back into the McLeod, where it's deserved to be since we started selling out the West Gym.

Anybody hear more on the link that was posted about the dome revisions and at the bottom said 5 million for wrestling training facility ??

              https://www.northerniowan.com/17475/...n-cedar-falls/

              Construction

The basketball/volleyball practice facility will be under construction for $15 million, and wrestling practice facilities for $5 million. The outdoor soccer field will also be under construction for about $2 million during the 2025 fiscal year. The sources of funds for this construction will be through gifts and grants.

Yes, at this point I'd expect they'll be demolishing West Gym and starting from scratch building a new practice facility where it used to stand.

We'll see what the plans are after this weekend, but if that's the case it makes far more sense to add wrestling into the basketball/volleyball facility. The rumored $5m isn't going to get you much of a stand alone facility, especially if demolition of West Gym needs to be part of that.

Also the fact that we are talking about the demolition of West Gym is just ****ing horrendous. Not even from a "We should host meets there and not at McLeod" view. From a historical marker on campus standpoint.

The West Gym really needs to be preserved. If not as a athletic competition facility, at least as an event space or something. Think of the money the university could make renting it out as a wedding venue every weekend!

I'm sorry, but the West Gym is no longer a legitimate money earner as a regular venue. It's just not, certainly not for weddings.

Is it on the National Register of Historic Places?

That would be an interesting strategy to force the hand...

Heard from a reporter friend from a prominent Iowa newspaper that an article on the whole West Gym situation will be coming after wrestling media day happens. He's working on getting details about what was told to the staff and when about the future of the West Gym.

The first in-depth review of this AD by the media. About ******* time!

If we were 89 miles South, there would have been several of these by now. Granted, that AD’s history isn’t very clean either.

I think this is the first real "decision" that has drawn scrutiny. Obviously, we have all voiced lots of concerns regarding his lack of fundraising ability and general lack of leadership within the department, but doing away with the West Gym was the first thing a reporter could really look at and go, "what lead to this decision?"
