  • Uni Mention During Big Ten Game.

UNI was mention today during the telecast of the Ohio State and Minnesota game as Rick Hartzell was a offical for the game. They were talking about how solid as a ROCK UNI has been playing and the ranking and some of the opponents we have played this season. They were taking a medical time-out for Rick as he was knock down by a player. Then the talk came up about the basketball program. They ended up talking about UNI for about five minutes which I was happy to hear.

I know when Hartzell first started as AD, some people thought he shouldn't be officiating because it took time away from his AD duties, but examples like this show that it's good for the program for him to be out and working. Getting people talking about our team is good.

I completely agree. It's unconventional but UNI is not going to get the exposure of a BCS school in the conventional way. So sometimes you have to do things differently to get noticed. It's working pretty well so far.

Yeah, it helps suppliment his salary a bit too...one way to keep him around as AD! I doubt any BCS schools would allow him to pull the double-duty. Maybe we should pitch in and spring for Mac to take some football officiating lessons so that he can suppliment his income a bit?!?!

        Just a thought!

i had been under the impression that he can do ACC and Big Ten games still considering he isn't a BCS conference AD .... thus, if he were to get a bigger AD job, would they allow him to ref at all, even for different conferences (like the Valley???)

also, if he did make a move to a BCS AD job, he wouldn't need the additional money.....

How much do officials make per Big 10 game? I'm assuming all his expenses are paid.

Didn't somebody like Bobby Knight complain last season or the season before about Hartzell officiating games because he claimed it was a conflict of interest for Hartzell to be the AD of a school in contention for an NCAA Tournament bid and officiating games of teams potentially in contention with UNI for a bid?
"Lot of people talked about Ohio State or Georgetown or Michigan State or whoever, [or] Maryland in our bracket. When the brackets came out, the first team I looked at was Northern Iowa," Kansas Coach Bill Self.

If I recall, there was some talk about it, and wasn't he doing the Louisville/Memphis game, where the Memphis kid had a chance to make 3 free throws, which would have hindered UNI's chances by taking away a bubble spot? If my aging memory serves, that is...

The game that generated the nonsense talk was a B10 game, I think Indiana and Michigan St? In the game you are referring to RH actually made a call which gave a team a chance to win which in theory could have hurt UNI's chances for an at large bid. They didn't talk much about that.

The whole thing was pure BS from a bunch of morons who have to find something to talk about for a living.

                  It was Indiana vs. Wisconsin.

It was absolutely bogus and the national media idiots picked up on it. Steve Czaban actually had a rant about it on his radio show and in his column. I emailed him to rip him a new one to which he told me to screw myself. I'll see if I can find it.

                    My Email to Steve Czaban

Wow, I got a kick out of reading this... I must have been in a really bad mood that day.

Anyway, here is what I wrote him and his response. We actually went back and forth a couple of times but I can only find this original. Again, as I said, it eventually ended with him telling me to screw myself. But still, I'll give the guy credit... I didnt really expect to hear back from him and he took the time for what that's worth.

                    Dear Sir,

Let me just start with the obvious and move on. First off, it's Hartzell, not Hartsell. You've ruined your credibility right there but since you continued, so will I.

The crux of your argument rests on the fact that HartZELL reffed the Memphis-Louisville game. My question to you is... can Rick HartZELL affect whether or not a free throw goes in? You must think so because if you had actually watched the game instead of learning about this secondhand, you'd know that HartZELL called the foul with no time left that put Memphis on the line with a chance to win the automatic bid. Oh wait, I get it. He made the call, realized what position he had just put UNI in, ran over to the locker room to put on his invisible costume, jumped up on the rim and rejected those shots? Is that how he did it?

Why didn't you bring up the Indiana-Wisconsin game too? I mean, he threw that one too didn't he? Nevermind that he also reffed the IU-MSU game 2 days earlier that Indiana won. Luckily, Indiana managed to ruin their tourney chances of making the big dance or you would have had more fodder.

Wait, how did this all start again? A moron named Doug Gottlieb shoots his mouth off on ESPN regarding a consipiracy theory that he picked up on from irate IU fans on message boards that couldn't just accept a loss. He broadcasts the view to a national audience. It's picked up by dozens of other media outlets and all of a sudden we have a "story".

Apparently the fact that this "story" ended a couple weeks ago meant nothing to you. You see, the Big Ten came out in defense of HartZELL. Gottlieb recanted his argument and actually called HartZELL to apologize. But then 2 weeks later you pick it up again... what a scoop my man!!

If you'd have done your homework before spouting off, you'd know that Rick HartZELL has been an NCAA official for over 20 years. He's reffed in over 15 NCAA tourneys. Don't you think if people had a problem with him, it would have come to light prior to this? Don't you think the governing body for officials scruitinizes him more than players, fans and coaches? He can't continue to ref games if it's obvious he isn't being objective. Did you know that the he is assigned games... it's not like he can control where he goes. Did you know that HartZELL has called coaches to make sure they are ok with him reffing and/or stepped out of a game if others see a potential conflict of interest? Why do we hear you complaining but we dont here it from Memphis or IU??

In my book, Ed Hightower is one of the best officials in the game. Agreed? If so, why don't you rip him? I mean, he is the VP on the Board at Southern Illinois. Maybe he fixed some games so that SIU would get to play a mid-major in the 1st round rather than another 10 seed from a big power conference like an Iowa or NC State, you think? Better yet, maybe he was in on this whole Northern Iowa plot. After all, SIU and UNI are in the Missouri Valley Conference together.

Who is making a big deal about this? Oh yeah, morons in the media. Doesn't it strike you as odd that amidst all of this hoopla over nothing, HartZELL continues to ref games? Perhaps it has something to do with his track record of objective officiating, which is more than I can say about you.
And his response... (I have edited the curse words, he definitely had them in there).

I have met Hartzell (briefly) when I worked in Charlotte. I do think that he knows how to ref a game. HOWEVER, a guy like that CANNOT... REPEAT CAN-F##KING-NOT hold a job of AD in the NCAA. Period. You can't f##cking do it. There IS a conflict of interest, no matter how hard working, honest, or good he is at blowing a god d@#n whistle.

Surely you can understand this. In the world of ethics consultants always talk about how avoiding ACTUAL conflicts of interest is not the point, one must avoid even the APPEARANCE of conflicts, lest anybody THINK there's something fishy going on.

So, ol' Ricky needs to decide. Does he want to be an AD, or a ref. He can't be both. You need to figure that out.
