Re: Appalachian State to FBS?
Interesting. I think with their continued track record of excellence, they should be just as able to make the leap as Marshall was a while back. Good luck to them (and good riddance, as we vie for FCS titles - tough roadblock).Give us a yell, HO! The purple and the gold
Victory for U-N-I!
Find out what the other team wants to do, then take it away from them.

Re: Appalachian State to FBS?
People like to point to Marshall's first couple years, when they were in the MAC. They had more talent coming from the FCS than the MAC teams did. However, as they were in the MAC they found they had to recruit differently, started losing of the the recruits they were after that they would have gotten had they been FCS. They then moved to CUSA, and have been bad since 2004.
The only school people point to is BSU. I can't explain them, they are an anomaly for sure.
Let's look at the other schools that have moved since 1990....Tell me if this is a list of school that you feel is "great company"
Alabama-Birmingham - 1996 Sun Belt
Arkansas State - 1990 Sun Belt
Boise State - 1996 WAC
Central Florida - 1996 CUSA
Connecticut - 2000 Big East - Got very very lucky by being in the BE for everything else.
FIU - 2005 (Much like FAU, start up program, only FCS due to NCAA rules)
Idaho - 1997 Sun Belt/WAC
Louisiana-Monroe - Sun Belt
Marshall - 1997 MAC/CUSA
Middle Tennessee State - 1999 Sun Belt
Nevada - 1992 WAC
North Texas - 1995 Sun Belt
Troy - 2002 Sun Belt
Western Kentucky - 2009 Sun Belt
Outside of the last 2 seasons at UCONN, the first 5 seasons or so in the MAC for Marshall, and Boise State that is a list of no-body losers of the FBS.

I hope ASU likes the idea of the Sun Belt, because unless these major changes do end up happening CUSA (sorry MSU fans) isn't really looking to do much except take current FBS teams.
Also, when it comes to overall athletics Appalachian State is a pretty bad athletic department. CUSA is a basketball conference, and that will be considered in any moves they make.

22 out of 120 doesn't sound like a majority to me.
"The report also shows that nearly half of all Division I athletic expenses are derived from salaries and benefits for coaches and administrators or scholarships given to players."
"The net operating results show FBS schools are losing nearly $9.5 million on average, compared with FCS schools that are losing slightly more than $9.1 million and non-football schools at approximately $8.6 million."

A newly released NCAA report shows that just 14 of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools made money from campus athletics in the 2009 fiscal year, down from 25 the year before.
68 made money off football in a tough economy.Last edited by ubuntuCAT; 08-23-2011, 12:56 PM."I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."

We played them once and got in our own way numerous times and still could have won the game.
In fact I think you could often argue that we're the only ones getting in the way of our first FCS title.
