Sad we don't recall off the top of our heads... I was thinking it was Marshall.

I am thinking it was Eastern Washington or Weber State, but I have totally blocked it from my memory...

The collective gasp when that happened could have deflated that roof. Pad the cement walls....brilliant concept yet no one thought of it.

          I looked it up.

We beat Eastern Washington in the first round 17-14. Shedd ran into the wall in a 29-7 win over McNeese State. Then we got Tresseled 19-7, that loss was more painful than Richmond...

I was at those games. I have to agree with you about the YSU game. I remember the annoying cowbells that the Penguin contingent brought. We couldn't figure out what cowbells had to do with Penguins. They rang those things the entire game while we all sat in stunned silence. I think we all felt there was no way we were losing that game and we were just in shock when it became obvious we were going to lose.

Yep, I would have been 9 at the time and I remember leaving the Dome in tears...

Re: FCS Playoff and UNI vs FBS Records

My opinion would be that the Richmond game was much worse than the YSU game.

With no Shedd I knew it would be an uphill climb and the offense just couldn't get started. Turnovers in a year they hardly turned it over. What's incredible is that the UNI defense only gave up 1 defensive TD in those 3 playoffs games. But they also gave up 3 special teams TD's. That game was more of a slow developing train-wreck.

The Richmond game was a high-speed maglev trainwreck. Our defense for just over 3 quarters let Richmond get practically nothing in the trenches. Outside of the flea-flicker TD they did nothing. We make another FG, not drop our own toss back to the QB, a half dozen other things we are probably champs in 2008. Then the last 10 minutes happened with the 2 TD's and we even stopped them once on 4th down. When I'm 100 years old and someone mentions "3 and out" I will still remember those three plays when all we needed was one stupid first down.

Oh and BC Panther, I almost started crying when we lost to Richmond (and I wasn't 9. lol). My buddy and I didn't say a word for an hour in the car ride home.

Richmond sucked. Absolutely sucked. Worst UNI sports loss I've experienced by far.

There were literally about a dozen "what if" plays in that game and if just a single one of them is flipped, we not only win that game but we probably take home the title.

The fact that the teams we had from '05-'09, with all that incredible talent, yielded zero national titles is incomprehensible to me.

You are correct...I've changed it now. Was just going off of what the media guide said. Thought they took into consideration the WKU D2 playoff game that was lost, but they didn't. Should be correct now.

I too was at a couple of these games. The Georgia Southern game was a shoot out, I think if we had two more minutes that game goes to OT and we eventually win and then we win the NC, but that is not how it turned out. Also didn't we lose Carl Boyd in the previous game?

                          I want to forget YSU...

Delaware with Flacco, that man just would not go down. Although there is more to this story. Why on earth did we abandon the run, C Lewis was having a hay day, but IIRC we did spot them at least one fumble recovery for TD and another fumble or interception at a critical time (no dome magic that night).

I really want to forget the Richmond game, what BS on the fainting Spider!
That guy was jogging off the field and the coach told him to fall down aka SFA style that year... With time running out Richmond got plenty of time to set up and get key players in, but we did not counter well on defense, so what can we say. Again, the NC was history. I also had people at work wonder what kind of BS the fainting Spider was, if that is more recently run 10 seconds off the clock and we win.

Well Lehigh came and just out played our team. Our guys looked as though they were already beaten when they came out of the locker room to start that game. I hate to admit it but I told a couple of friends we were going to lose, unless there was some type of miracle or play that inspired our Panthers.

Well one more is the double missed/blocked FG against Iowa in 2009. Hard to swallow that one, plus it probably broke the team spirit that season. Win that game and I would wonder how the rest of our season would have been, as well as Iowa's. IIRC they won some really close games and went onto the Orange Bowl and won.

Lets get over the past and look to the future, this Panther team might be really good and surprise a few teams.

I'd hardly say that that game "broke the team spirit". True, if we had won that game (or if we would have held on at Illinois State, or against SIU), we would have made the playoffs. But if anything, knowing that they were that close to beating Iowa, bolstered the team, or even made some a bit over-confident, rather than breaking the spirit.

This was the most deflating loss I have ever witnessed. I was there in '92 for the YSU loss and for the Lehigh loss also. The Richmond loss was awful. We would have easily won the NC that year.

I also feel Richmond was the worst loss. All the reasons have already been stated. The YSU loss was bad. What makes it worse, was YSU was found to be guilty of cheating during that era, and given a slap on the wrist. I remember the NE Louisiana game being painful too. I remember listening to that game on the radio inside Rider Hall. UNI was way down, came back, and then lost in OT. Mike Smith was the QB, he was a stud.

My favorite win was at New Hampshire when UNH was number 1. I just watched on TV, but any game that UNI wins where the opposing team student section chants "purple [email protected]@ots" is awesome.
